For BVF and Rockm...a tree without potential?

Frankentree as of today.

The bolt was removed and replaced with 2 small screws. Holes were filled. This one had a bout with spider mites that was controlled (with my home made brew). Summer heat halted growth but it started sending new growth a week ago. I'll let it run the rest of the year and work on it before spring.

...looks like a nice recovery. It's well on the way. It would be great to see its progress in a leafless state this winter.

Beautiful trunk. From the current look, you cannot tell that the taper was man made. I look forward to seeing this tree out of leaf. I think then a better assessment can be made. In the meantime, this shows extremely insightful and creative work.

Speaking of rockm. I don't think he has been on here in a while. I hope he is doing ok.

Though I banter with the guy a lot, I miss him too. One of my most respected folks here actually.

Like you, I hope he is okay and his absence is just by choice and not poor health or any "nasty stuff".

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I've always been enthralled by Dario's thought process on creating a taper. Unsure how it would effect the tree. But...it's an amazing step in "out of the box thinking" to creating a taper!image.jpg

One can see...it has not effected the tree other than creating an amazing taper!

Just seen an update on Facebook...and thought others may appreciate an update on this process!

Nice. I've imagined doing something like this before, but it's one of those "easier said than done" things for me; I have clumsy hands. Curious how the tree will be long term.

Well...it's pushing new growth...in a month I see it being a ball of foliage as it keeps chugging along. It seems to have healed nicely...bolts removed now. The only long term effect is moving along in the right direction is my opinion.

The bolt was there less than a year but got replaced by 2 small screws and flow-able filler afterwards. (Link attached for filler)

I think this takes a new approach for creating a taper...which I can see so far...great success in the seeing the results so far.

He was so kind to offer me more details when I enquired though PM on Facebook. I find it just fascinating! Thought others might as well.

Hmmm...pretty interesting for sure. It does have a lot of potential. Thanks for posting Cadillac!!
Guess I was gone long enough to miss Dario's exit??

Just so that I don't let Dario down, You do understand that this attempt was a failure based on the last photo. The whole back half of the tree is missing. What you have showed is a giant verticle chop. If you were to turn this tree around I'll bet there is a large gaping maw of exposed cracked wood that has shrunk.

image.jpg image.jpg From the front it looks amazing. I have never been told that the "back" was to look as good as the front!?! I posted this for others to learn possibly a new method to create a taper. It's shown success and I think is a great out of the box thought process. I feel others can learn from this method and use it. I know others already are using it...with hopefully the success Dario had.

Personally I don't see where the back looking as bad as you see it Al... But, again...it is the back. ;)
(Al...Dario doesn't come to the forum any longer this was my post.)

I would imagine if someone attempted this method with less a nice finished back that Dario accomplished...the possibility of carving could be used at some point. (Just tossing that out to any who may wish to try this method)

Ahh. Trying to mentally rotate the tree in my feeble mind, details were left out. I missed them but see them now.

People are going to sign up to the book for this one!
