Yes, even the rootball looks like a tilted plant from a nursery pot.Looks like
you're right, the back is certainly a mess. This one probably has some of the "featured on stream" price inflation.
Not really. The redwoods are pretty great. There are several spruce and pines that are extremely good as well.I think we have finally reached the point where Ryan/Mirai has more trees than they can work on at his high level. A lot of these look like they haven't had much work done to them or like the olives, he is looking to get rid of a certain species. The nicest to me are the redwoods and some of the native junipers.
I'm extremely surprised anyone bought those two maples at those prices. I don't believe the estimated ages of 40 years, these both look like cuttings unless I'm completely missing something with the growth rate on this variety.
Overall, a meh listing this year compared to prior years.
The reason those expensive trees are "snapped up" is that the people buying them have likely been looking at them (probably in person) for a while and were waiting for them. The market for $5k bonsai is not as small as you think. Beyond $10K, that's rarified air, but it's also not likely as small as you think. It's always interesting how quickly some of these trees get scooped up given the price tag. I have to imagine the number of people who are in the market for $5K-$10K bonsai trees has got to be pretty small.
The one tree that stuck out to me (pun intended) looks a little, uh, flaccid.
Olive No. 1
This tree embodies a captivating blend of strength and compactness, poised to evolve into an exceptional representation of wild beauty. Hailing from California's Central Valley, it carries a rich history from a bygone era that enhances its value. Beyond its impressive bonsai form and initial...goods.bonsaimirai.com

As for those maples, with the $100-$150 pots under them, and tiny already containerized root masses. They aren't recent cuttings, but they are clones ("second generation'" as Ryan put it). They're also probably not 40 years old, but both are Coral Bark (sango kaku--a specialized cultivar) and on their own roots with some nebari by the looks of it. arguably a decent buy if you ask me.
500 including the pot... maybe
