Mame contest idea

I got to say had it not been for this contest I don't think I would have jumped into mame this quickly. Like you say there is more to doing it and doing it well then what it may seem at first and I got no idea how I'm going to go to be honest. I'm just a beginner as is so not expecting great things.

Also today I brought a big tray and some lava rock to use as a humidity tray for my smaller shohin and mame trees. I'm pretty sure sure I saw J Norbury post elsewhere that he uses one and he is in the Netherlands so with the heat in Spain it seems like a good idea.

I used humidity trays as well but being home all the time I've found it easier now to drench the ground under my benches every few hours. There is either concrete or pavers under the benches so it just evaporates over a few hours.

Make Bonsai Small Again :p:p

I think your climate is probably a bit more naturally humid than mine, evaporation here is done in 30 minutes normally. I figure no harm in trying it anyway.

Also garden center no. 2 was a wash out today, wrong time of year obviously. Although they did have buxus, cypress and juni's none of them interest me at all.

Great links too, cheers.

Yea mostly flowers and what not currently at the nurseries here. I have to visit some a little further from me though.

I'm off today maybe I'll have an hour or two. All depends on the rain.

Pretty much, flowers keep the wife and kids happy at least. I did get a compact and szygium buxifolia though so not a total loss. Will try a new place out next time.

Ahh rain, we had our days worth of rain for the summer this week. Full of Saharan sand and pretty much rained mud. :D

Woo hoo! Not sure why I didn't find this sooner, I will have to give this a try!

Hopefully I'll have some entries before the 20th

I may have found a 3rd entry that is not a Bougie. :D

It's one of these....

The more I think about it the more I think I may go with this one, it'll probably be a twin trunk though which would be weird but then again I am weird.
On the plus side it is a Coprosma, they back bud and handle root work easily and fairly sure it is a Repens variety which is a NZ bush but is naturalised in Australia so that is close enough for me.
The other intersting thing with it is it would seem one trunk is variegated and the other not so that is a contrast in itself.
Yeah, I is going to do it and get on with the choppy choppy.

I'm still learning the basics of bonsai. I had never intended to enter this, or any, contest for quite a long time. However, I've read through this thread a few times now, and it's been nothing but encouraging. It looks like this should be a positive experience for everyone and a great opportunity for me to learn. So I'm giving it a shot.

My first (and probably only) entry is a Willow Leaf Fig. It's been sitting on my kitchen window sill for the past year or so. It was an impulse buy at a local nursery and I never did anything with it. It's actually been relatively healthy sitting in the window and has never looked unhappy. We're having some work done on our house and we replaced the kitchen windows. After putting in new energy-efficient windows the plant has sulked. I always wondered why people had such trouble keeping figs happy in the house and it dawned on me. Our terrible windows from 1950 were letting in the full spectrum of sunlight and it benefitted the plants. Now I finally had a reason to want to put the plant outside. Even though I say the plant was healthy, it hasn't grown much since I've owned it. I'm really hoping moving it outside will stimulate it. Here's the before shot:

I pulled it out of the pot and was completely surprised to find a large tuberous root. I had assumed this was just a small cutting.

I found what hopefully will be the new radial plane out of which all new roots will grow. I cut it with a nice sharp knife and dusted with powdered rooting hormone (this was probably completely unnecessary). I hedged my bet by leaving roots further up the trunk as well. I'm hoping being outside will encourage the tree to grow enough that the trunk swells and creates a believable taper. We will see.

Since I've never kept the plant outside and I just cut off most of the roots, I wanted to plant it a bit deeper in the soil. I found a tall-ish but small pot and buried it in pretty deep. I also didn't wire it in, so I'm hoping the soil keeps it secure in the pot.

Please feel free to give feedback. My plan is to let the branches extend and thicken. If inner leaves start getting shaded out, I will partially defoliate the branches and just keep the inner leaves and the extreme growing tips. That's a problem I hope to have in the next few months. Any advice on when I should start fertilizing?

Thanks,
Scott

@pweifan
Realy cool great find :D
Great you entered you can only learn from this !

@defra ... our photos for the entry are the photos judged for the first part?

When the entry date is passed two weeks to vote for the best entry to get a winner for part one.
/QUOTE]

Assuming so...then,next photo is of it in its pot. For eventually being judged.

Why vote at all for the entry photo?
I mean it should be taken into consideration when voting at the end for sure but the idea is to find easy material and nothing overly developed, you can't really equate a stick in a pot to the finished product is all I'm saying.

Plus aint nobody gonna vote for the half dead stick in a pot I entered. :p

I thought voting was for in the pot stage...reread then thought maybe not. Just don't wish to miss a photo entry this early in the game.

I guess we could vote for best entry finding a suitable candidate is part of the game should i make a voting topic with each tree posted seperatly when entry date passes?

So using the photos we entered...just in another location. I assume one would vote for species chosen and such. With our material so raw...and not really working them.

My Goji has wire on it now ...my ivy is a wild mess. Was hoping to enjoy this years fall foliage. So...I may just crop the photo if we are expected to do a new photo. But it sounds like the use of our previous photo is to be posted. Which is also fine.

Totally agree voting would be difficult on first photos.

I think so, I mean stuff is already posted and I think the guidelines listed are pretty good as is.
Maybe a thread specific for progressions would be cool but so far I think the rules are clear and lets stick to them, no major changes needed.

Reading the rules is where I got confused...I think all who joined the contest are winners of the first part...of participating. I'm fine with letting the pot photo be the first judged...

Good point starfox
No entry vote
But pic must be saved to show progression

I'm totally happy to post progression pics, if for no other reason than for a little bit of help if I ask for it but I think it is the journey that mean will mean more.
Seriously, the last contest by Source was great as a beginner, it made me try things I had not done before and this one is the same as Mame was never on my radar.
I'm enjoying this more than my plants are growing and that annoys me.
