Mame contest idea

I’m a little confused.

My interpretation of the rules was this:
Part 1: find material
Part 2: get the tree into a pot no greater than 4.5” on the widest side
Part 3: keep it alive and develop into a tree with a height no greater than 6”

I have a couple of trees that I am considering entering that require significant reduction. Most of them will not be below 6” until well after they have been repotted. My plan was to do the final reduction in the spring of 2019.

Is the 6” height limit for part 2 and part 3 or is this limit only for the final entry?
Hmm didnt think that far ahead
I think after repot one should be allowed to let things grow out to inprove taper and branch structure

Final result must be 6" or below ?

What do the contestents think of that ?

Agreed here!

Why are they too advanced??
That just means I picked some quality trees and I won't be mad about being denied. I'm still going to style them and keep them.
Just happy to have found them.

NO!! I was just playing around. They are nice I like them :)

I may have- in record time killed my contest trees. Both of them.
They had bugs and I treated them and they may be dead. We will see :)
I also cut the crap outta them- at one point saying out loud- no guts no glory.
They were fine trees maybe just a little trimming would've been fine. Wired them broke an important branch. Tried to wire in the pot damaged an excellent surface root.
Time to slow down.

So far so good with my little crape. Obviously they can handle some pretty rough treatment. My pot is within the rules of the contest at 4.5" but I don't really like it with this tree. It's too deep. After the contest is over I'll probably move it to another little pot I have that's much shallower but a little too wide for the contest. I've already been able to put a little wire on this guy and the bark is starting to peel.

lol, no idea what it was when I brought it but think I have a fair idea now and it could be a good candidate.
Not sure just yet if I will enter it as I was disappointed with that nursery this time so will hit another couple up soon.

Nice ! Still looking for my third tree. Glad I have time

Yeah time is a good thing but that said utilising as much of it as possible is a good thing too.

Here are a couple of self seeded Pines. They are probably 2 yo, no idea if they are mameable(it's a word now) or not and given that it is likely a P. Pinea it's probably not the greatest idea I have had. Still options and all that, they can't stay in that bed for too many more years.

I'm on board.
:D

This is making me think and wanted to share lol...................You know from the surface it looks easy to make a mame. But to create a really good one the tree has to really have certain things just right.

The focus in bonsai lately is on all these bigger trees and with those size trees it is a lot easier to get away with flaws or remove them or work around them.

Not much to work with on a Mame. They are true depections of creativity and skill.

I love mame and shohin trees the most for that reason.

btw it would be nice to see a conifer in the contest (thinking bout those pines you posted)

I got to say had it not been for this contest I don't think I would have jumped into mame this quickly. Like you say there is more to doing it and doing it well then what it may seem at first and I got no idea how I'm going to go to be honest. I'm just a beginner as is so not expecting great things.

Also today I brought a big tray and some lava rock to use as a humidity tray for my smaller shohin and mame trees. I'm pretty sure sure I saw J Norbury post elsewhere that he uses one and he is in the Netherlands so with the heat in Spain it seems like a good idea.
