Mame contest idea

I think I have my entry trees. But since two are currently being air-layered off a full-size tree, I may wait a little to make sure both will likely survive before I officially submit them. The two being air-layered are crabapples. The third is an experiment in fusing three chinese elm whips, so that should be interesting to see how far they get by 2020.

First two pics are option 1, twin trunk, and it's got roots!

Middle two pics are option 2, either broom or leaning/semi-cascade form with not much root activity yet.

Last two pics are chinese elm whips from cutting taken August 2016. They were individuals, but I repotted them and tied them together at the base last week. Way out of season, I know. But I think it's worth it to push them for this contest.

Why does everybody keep asking me that, lol. :D
Sorry.

It's a little under 5 inches but that is measuring from the tips of the feet which are wider than the pot.
It's so close but really not just there.

 This contest is going to be my undoing...now, I need a stand. And I don't even show bonsai. Just a backyard hobbiest. But it sure is perdy! :D

I am pampering an invasive weed...with that Boston Ivy I have.

All I can say is...THIS HAS BEEN FUN!

OK, update time.
This pic was from my last update, the tree on the right I left that top little bit of green mainly as an indicator to see how it coped with the root pruning. Maybe it would sulk and drop some leaves or something.......

it didn't. :D

It's going quite well, I can now remove that top branch and be a bit more selective with my structure on this.

The one on the left on the top photo has done pretty well too, it didn't need the initial root prune as that was done before it went all crispy as in the entry pic.

Lots of growth and things to choose from plus it is flowering it's nut off at the moment. Lots more that are starting to show as well.
Got a bit too much low growth so will rub that out before it leaves too much of a scar. Growth is nice and compact but I have not decided if this is a blessing or hindrance yet, I did pick this species because of that though.

My 3rd entry so far is nothing to show, not done anything yet but it is at least still looking healthy. I do worry about it being in the nursery pot for too long so may just bite the bullet and cut it back and repot soon.

So it looks like Bougainvillea is the most trusty plant for this contest!!! :)
Same experience here with my own.

I'm not thrilled with my Goji...it's fighting a small bit of fungus. Going to treat today...Also not back budding as I had hoped. It only budded where I had chopped back to. Nothing further back on the branches. Assuming it will eventually toss canes like my pyracantha. But...I look at it and think...you are hopeless! Making the Boston Ivy my favorite of the two. I half want to rip the suckers and stragglers that came with it out of the pot. But am holding back on doing so. I can pass them to someone of one would want a young starting...come spring of next year fungus free of course. But the untidiness is driving me crazy. Like a bunch of mad weeds have taken over but they are Goji so I left them in the pot.

I've been lazy. None of my trees have made it back to their tables. I need to treat them first and it is easier all on the back patio together as they are. Also...sprinkler watering lazy me. They need fertilized as well...and I need to do that. I'm getting my energy back though from our trip. So today...I will focus on the trees. Getting them back out where they belong.

They definitely are a good choice for our type of med climate and you can pretty much play with them all year which is a double bonus.
Even the one I retracted from the contest dropped it's leaves but has come back a bit now and is flowering.

My little ulmus is growing strong too after my pruning session still no buds were i wanted them tough but we got time :D

Looking good too.
