Mame contest idea

The Goji...it's not back budding back further on the branches as I had hoped. Just where the prune cut was placed. Learning this Maybe slow going building ramification. But hoping to expose a bit more exposed roots during repot come spring. A love/hate relationship to say the least.

#1. American hornbeam, this was actually one of the first trees I collected. The original tree was about 3" in diameter. Everything but some of the suckers at the base died back. I've kept potting it down into smaller pots over the last few years. I think it could be interesting but it's going to be a tight fit in a 4.5" pot. I think I can get it to fit.

JeanLuc, this one looks interesting. Can you take a closeup of the trunk on this one? I'm curious what's hidden in there :)

For your approval
After I killed my other 2 Home Depot fukien tea I went back and got this one.
I didn't take a before pic. I wanted to make sure it would live first.
This offers a lot of challenges and rule breakers.
Hoping I can keep it alive and doing well.
Can I sub this for the others that I killed??
The pot will change eventually.

Here you go. It's one of those trees I've never had the heart to get rid of it.

Here is a picture from shortly after it was collected about 4 years ago. If I remember right the box it was in was about 15-16" on a side.

Update on the False Shrubby Buttonweed:

This was the tree on June 24th:

Same day after pruning and wiring:

And here is the tree tonight at 2 different planting angles. It needs a little attention soon:

It has really started to take off this past month with the rain. Has grown well past the wire.

My Coprosma has back budded like crazy, it's almost as if it wants you to chop the roots and cut it back in summer.
Still have no inkling as to styling though.

Do we post our entries here to get the OK to put them into the contest thread?

If so, here are my three:

First is a Tiger Bark Ficus rooted cutting I took in May, just before this thread started

Next is a juniper from Home Depot which died way back after I trimmed and repotted in June. It's survival is very much in doubt, but I will try anyway.

And last is a Key Lime I started from seed in the winter of '16

The PEZ dispenser is 10cm for reference.

Well I went for it and got my mugo repotted.
It was a tight fit in the pot but I managed. Getting it in there probably would have made @Vance Wood faint though.

It will be a miracle it it survives to the end of the contest. I figured go big or go home.

The hardest part is to keep it happy in the small pot and not to let it dry out.

If it makes it next year I'll get it wired out.

I may try to get a better picture tomorrow.

Have your little conducter search the mugo train thread for "eff rooted".

I did 2 and they are BOTH putting roots out the basket.

I'll bet you're lopping it back to those first 2 branches by next July and finishing top 3 in this contest.

Bitchin.

My main concern is that it has such a small volume to grow in. The too wet zone and the too dry zone will meet in the middle. I may try the trick of putting the pot in another pot filled with substrate. It should lower the "water table" in the pot and help keep the moisture level more consistent.

Here is a little bit better picture.

Maybe want to double check with @Vance Wood ...

But to me...
Books got you worried!
And on a tree killing mission!

Just water it more than you think you oughta and you'll be fine!

A long time ago I read....
The faster your soil dries out, the more you can water, the better! because of the drying action....

Nonsense!

It's the oxygen!

That's why I been watering my trees twice a day regardless....

I doubt any of our "bonsai soils" will hold any more water with a second or third watering anyway...

But it damn will sure bring you oxygen down there that much more!

Hell...
I been watering my nursery soil mugos twice a day....
The buds are fat as hell!

More water....
Less headache!
