Mame contest idea

Someone needs to get a procumbens up in here.
Kingsville boxwood would be an excellent choice.
Cotoneaster?
For people in the heat: Texas ebony.
Saw a bunch of those little mugo and spruces when I was walking around the nursery today. Like $12.00
Miniature leaved elms?
Someone could win this handily with a seiju or Hokkaido or yatsabusa elm.
Think little tree...little foliage.
Don't make me buy something at the show tomorrow and enter. They have the tree and the pot right there. And I'm the kind of guy who will slap that baby right in the pot tomorrow.
I think I just talked myself into it.
Well see how much I have after I buy another regular sized tree tomorrow.

Amen....

Where the trunks at?

Hack one of them lil box up!

Sorce

I was taking pics of some trees this morning so I though I would throw up an update of my 2 entries. I'm happy with how they are coming along so far. They are sitting in a tray full of sphagmum with sphagnum on top as well to keep them from drying out. I'm hoping the roots will grow into the tray below similar to what @jeremy_norbury does. I'm not sure if the sphagnum is the best medium for this but it was handy. I could probably also use some turface or something similar.

I actually push mine down into bonsai soil (all inorganic) - like kitty litter or akadama. Quite a number are "stuck" right now.

I don't even like mame but I think I may be in.

That would be awesome!
I got an ulmus entered btw!

Yesterday i was visiting tentakeleartje and he gave me this little ilex
Thinking of entering it in this contest but only if you all are ok with it

@defra I have no problem with it...I am not looking for new material. But...after trimming my Boston Ivy back...I am not sure I will have the gumption to keep it 6"...maybe in a proper bonsai name pot will change the direction thought process. Making me wish to make it more...

I cut several feet off it the other day. For wintering such a long vine would be nuts! But...I still left tendrils. Currently I imagine it's a Shohin...not measured...could slip into a kifu with tendrils...but the trunk/bones are for a mame. Needs spring to be repotted so I can for sure know what I am doing with it. It's unorthodox currently in its present state for bonsai I would imagine. Even trimmed back...

Right then. If you don`t mind guys if you could vet my choices a little before I commit, I would be grateful. I know its a comp but I`m still a noob, and a few weeks ago I thought I would pass on this as I`m still finding my bonsai feet so to speak. But.. why not jump in and have a go :)

So first choice is a rooted cutting from a dwarf Scottish williow:
Dwillow.JPG

Second would be a cotoneaster I picked up for think like £1 of a bargin area at a garden center about 6 months ago. Cut right back, bare rooted to inorganic and recovered to here: (maby a second cut back, cant remember)
Ceaster.JPG

And two choices for 3rd.. Picked up today is this prickly heath: (first time seeing one, and would need a male plant to get berries again from a quick read, but going in blind)

Or, could go for real curve ball and go for one one these Birches growing on tiles:

Personally I'd go for everything BUT the cotoneaster just because you have some somewhat uncommon plants. I don't think I've ever seen a mame birch. That said, a cotoneaster might be easier to grow/train and I'm not trying to force you into something more difficult.

I've never heard of the dwarf Scottish willow. Do you know the latin name?

Thought ones said birch are known for dieback...not something I may wish to place in a contest...but that's me. My material has its own hiccups. Think it was a weeping birch I almost bought and was talked out of. Not saying you can't play around with it...but for contest material...it has its characteristic risks known to the species. @Victorim ...

I might have to look for a make to get berries again...sure looks mighty pretty with them on.

Salix 'Boydii'. The mother is https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/id.27367/

I know.. The urge to go for the birch is so tempting.. sucker for torment :p

( edit - @Maros do you think this is viable? )

I would go with the cotoneaster tough plants good for smaller sized bonsai good for starters

The one with the berries

The willow

Not the birch not because the dieback but because i like to see birches as a bigger sized bonsai but thats personal i guess lol

You can only learn from entering this contest!

I've narrowed my potential list of entries down to 5. 2 out of 3 will be tropical considering the February ending date.

My nursery friend has one more dwarf cotoneaster. Killed the first one but my second is doing well. Too well to cut back to Mame so I may have to get that one. Wonderful red fall color. 2 gallon nursery can to mame may be too much for it.
I wanted to do something unusual. Along the lines of @Cadillactaste , I I have a Virginia Creeper mowed over several times and plucked from the yard this summer and stuffed in a tiny pot for the heck of it. It's going crazy right now and expect to get good ramification out of it in a couple years for this contest so it has a nice winter look.
All good fun:) This will be my 3rd contest here.IMG_20170815_104126725.jpg

I have a love/hate relationship with that creeper of mine. I currently hate mine come winter and it's bare. But...like you, am just now being developed up top. The owner before selling...cut everything off. All the ramification...wasn't happy with it. Then decided to sell it. I always look at it come winter...when it's dormant and think...it's going to be one of the first I sell if I had to thin the collection. It is supseptible to black spot more so than the Boston Ivy I have. It always effects it's fall colors. I much like the fullness and characteristics of its cousin the Boston Ivy. Smaller foliage. But...it's vines are super thing...I've not seen it come winter. It may also be a love/hate thing. Wishing you well with your tree.

I needed to quit procrastinating and pick em out. Maybe away this weekend and didn't want to miss out.
I'm all in, like em or not. LOL
Should be good fun.
Yes Darlene I may regret ever pulling it out from under my boat. I have a couple more practical entry's but... what the heck?

It may force you to love it putting in that much time with it. That is my hopes with the Goji. Currently I think...if it wasn't for the contest it might not be on my bench. The Boston Ivy...I really think is...may I say it. Cute...more maybe an accent than bonsai material. At least current state. Winter will be interesting to see what that Boston Ivy looks like.

Thinking about carving a hole in that old driftwood stump big enough to hold that plastic training pot for the next couple years. Seems happy by the pond in full sun if I can keep it wet enough.

I guess since were all in different time zones ill be flexible with the time i dont want to get people to miss out cus of the time differences i aint gonna bitch or cut people out if there alitle late its about fun !

We've all had plenty of notice. I for one appreciate stretching the entry date out a bit as summer is my busy time in the shop. If you gave us six more months I'd still be procrastinating...
I still wonder about that Bald Cypress Mame... kinda wish I'd have entered that one. Set the tiny pot in the pond and forget about it... LOL

It will be fun to watch all these develop over three years. The other 2 contests I've entered have been instant gratification.

The search for the smaller trees is the main thing for me setting up this contest

I mean to realize and promote the mame bonsai cus most of the trees or mindset about bonsai is let it grow out, comments as put it in full ground for a couple of years when instead of doing so or airlayer a small portion of a bigger thing that otherwise will be pruned off anyway has a life as mame wich can be grown out to shohin at some point

also unintresting stock is looked at from a different perspective

I walk trough nurserys now with my eyes wide open not only to scout for the bigger trunks but also the smaller stuff does often looks interesting ever since this thread was created !

Its going to be great fun to see all those trees devellop allong with the artists!
