I’m really happy with the way this tree has developed over the last two years. It was put into the current pot this spring. I was quite surprised that the smaller pot has not significantly slowed it down much.

Next spring I will do the final trunk chop. There are lots of buds at the base of the trunk that I’m hoping will take off. My main worry is that the tree will push juvenile growth.

I am also curious about management of needle length. I have done some experimentation with de-candling as is done with JBP with promising results. I am hoping the combination of de-candling and the small pot will keep the needle length in check.

In the spring I may also repot into a slightly smaller pot. The one it is in I feel is still just a little too big.

#3 Mugo Pine




I’m happy that this one is still alive but that is about it. I purchased this tree specifically for this contest. It was put into the current pot summer of 2017.

This year it has just sulked with very little growth and some dieback. It has pushed new buds but I still have some doubts about it's survival. I do have to admit that much of this is my fault. I was pretty brutal with the roots at repot.

My first tree is a juniper. Exact species is unknown. Main goal has been to reduce the roots for placement into a smaller pot as well as remove some basic foliage.

First image shows the juniper as purchased. Second image is the first round of trimming. Third and fourth tree are prepped for winter. My final image will be next winter!





My main focus has been to slowly reduce. I think I could have reduced much more, but I did not want to harm the tree. Next summer the focus will be reducing the canopy.

Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) , unknown subspecies

This is a very cute little tree, I only have a couple Japanese maples so growing one as a mame has been interesting. I have been able to reduce leaves on other maples so this will be interesting next summer.

Its growth was not at all satisfying this past season.

you are in time posting your result so its all good to me you made an effort to be in time !
but i still do reccomend you to post a pic with measurments whenever you have the time to do so it will add reality of the size to the progression of each mame tree we are trying to create in the sake of this contest

I'm so sorry to be so brief. Is there still another thread where we can just talk about the contest in general? I can provide more information there I just wanted to get this in before the deadline.

Ok im a tad behind schedule here...
Last year i was changeing jobs and was very busy.
Ive been in divorce this year, i know its a lame excuse but still... i didnt had any motivation, time or even acces to my own tree's since i had to live with my parrents again for a while but with a delay of two years i will set up the final thread in a bit.
I wont participate myself since all my smaller tree's got fried during summer and i was unable to do the care taking myself.
Ill tag everyone that updated their entry's and lets see those results !

Sometimes life...gives us hard suckered punches. I'm sorry for all you faced and lost. But am glad you seem to have gotten to the other end of things where life is settling down.
I think of you when I look at my material. I've both that I pulled from this contest. Going more shohin size with the material...but enjoy the one I bought specifically for the contest. So appreciative of your creating this contest...even if I removed myself from it.

@Cadillactaste life sadly is a struggle some times but as you say i will keep my chin up and can only move forward from this point, as with bonsai scars will heal over time
I think deciding to withdraw your contest tree in the sake of its health and best end result is worth a price as well, you chose for the tree and not your own needs to participate in a contest, well done
