Terra Cotta: My musings on...and resulting actions with.

What Number Cones did you get?

What is your understanding of using them?

I am having deja Vu with this.

I thought at first Anthony spoke with you about cones, but I believe Island Innovation would have you mix your clay with some flux, like dry clear glaze or other, and make cones out of it.

This way when your homemade cones melt, you know your clay is near maturity.

Po Po. Frugal frugal! Smart smart! Rich rich!

Haha! This cost me a total of 8 dollars WITH shipping.. (cause the box was damaged) ;).. that’s why my “selection” options were few.... well singular, actually.

Making my own cones sounds MUCH better.. I would’ve been upset had I spent a decent amount of money.

🤓

And about the “Number Cones” ... i DON’t know. 🤣 Help. (I’m assuming you DO NOT mean “number of”)

Amen Brother!

I knew there was something behind it!

Next time save that 8 dollars and ask us first!

Short of buying every cone between roughly 010 and 02, which is the range of earthenware temps, you can't "find" the cone you should be melting.

6 is considered stoneware. Blah blah blah....

I think you'll quicker make your own successfully.

Make note of the lower 022 - up through 10.

The first one was made in the middle and named, hence the 0's before lower temps.

From a German Chemist. Just saying!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

This is language I understand!

Can you say small cones 022 to 08 ?

Once again they are vitreous.
No need to be primative........................

Now is Yi Xing really firing to cone 8 ?
Good Day
Anthony

Keep them Self supporting 6's.

Easy local sale for at least $20!

@Anthony , if I was to go about making cones for earthenware... would the “garden glaze” you mentioned earlier (in this thread) be the route to go? And if so, what ratio/mixture would you recommend?

Or i’ll just stare at ‘em from time to time.. “I’ll get the means to melt you bastards.. one day!!!”xxx

My grandkids will ask, what are those, Grandpa?

“Well let me tell you a lil’ story.. gather ‘round”

😂😂

I want to know as well what Anthony thinks, so I am by no means attempting to answer for him.

You are basically trying to get your local clay "cone" to melt, "just before" your clay clay. So the addition of any flux in amounts maybe 1 3 and 5 percent may be a good starting point for your homecones.

In reduction, iron could be this flux.

Then once your homecones melt, (keeping them visible is the difficulty now) you turn it off and test the clay for absorption.

It will take a few trials, but you will begin to get a feel for things and it will get exponentially easier.

So this.... is unfiltered clay, riverbottom mud and unfiltered, predominantly black sand.. and I’ve got “the fixins” for several more batches this size WITHOUT disrupting my supply of NON-“muddied” clay.

I’m going to be trying something crazy here, soon. ;)A49B8BF4-7590-434A-94DD-7746EEF95D44.jpeg

As much sources as you have, I wouldn't doubt you actually end up with a cone 6 clay from somewhere.

It'll still work out better to sell them cones and get smalls......

Who needs to get slapped in order for you to take this to that next level of seriousness?

Are we still looking for your kiln?

They want me back at the clay store and I told them no. 2 other Iron fuckers want me back and I said no.
I can't leave all this shit out there and NOT do what I do to help you do what you do..so what are we doing?

@Smoke said we are afraid of a paradym shift, it's the definition of pardygm I argue.

I think the “me” that represents my fear of failure needs a slapping. ;)

We are still looking. :)

I’ll see if the ceramics shop here has smaller cones.. maybe organize a “trade”.

$ $ says ...all the above remains true. Sell the cones at a profit, and "fuuuuuuuuuuuuck" buying other ones for now. Maybe when you get a kiln kiln. But meh meh.

I found a cazy dope "firepit" the other night, upturned it and the chickens lay eggs there now, though it would make a great "undersmallkiln" firebox. (I got musings too!) Fknchkns!

Plans abound.

Your plans are more important to me currently then mine. If you're into reading, read Joe Hyams book Zen in the Martial Arts.

There is a piece about wasting time with Bruce Lee. It's a life changing read.

That is how I feel you are wasting your time by NOT accepting failure as a path to success as Will Smith Describes.

Fail. Fail AF!

It's the only path to greatness.

I believe with enough research, we can minimize failure to once.

Failure and Observation, can reduce failures to ONCE.

We must remain mindful of the intracacies of failure though. Which is why we should keep failures seperate enough to know them from one another. (Don't Repot and prune 6 times on one season)

We must be aware of the "fingerprint" of each failure.

Get through an entire hand before folding.
