My year around bonsai work in the Inland Empire, CA

On my way to work, I pass by a lot of houses and lands with big olive, pomegranate. I pay attention to those trees daily! My effort is finally paid off this morning. There is one old nursery demolished for shopping center. This nursery was possessed by Hispanic person. As you might know that the Hispanic likes to grow the pomegranate. It has a lot of tree, mostly palm. It has one giant pomegranate tree. Luckily I found a free time at lunch today, so I came to the site and talked to the boss of the demolish company. He was operating the Bobcat compact excavator to remove a big tamarix tree. I asked him to see if I could get pomegranate tree for free. He said he had no problem to give me it. He asked me how I could bring it back home. I showed him my SUV . He looked at it and said " I don't think it can fit into your car"! He may be right because the pomegranate is really big. It has 3 trunks and each trunk is about 40 cm. Its trunks are really nice for multiple knots! It looks very old. I am guessing it may be at least 50 years old. I believe the root base right beneath the soil line is about 1 meter!!! I can make at least 4 different trees from this one.

If you connect these two pictures together, you can imagine how big of the root base beneath the soil line.

The good thing is that my big brother who has a big truck will come to the site to pick up the tree and we can share each other. Another good thing is that the boss of demolition company will use his equipment to get the tree out for me. I am looking forward to seeing those stumps in my yard next week! :)

I just got the Japanese hornbeam today. It will be my first try on hornbeam. I will feed it well prior to any work.

That pomegranate is crazy! Did you get it picked up?
Looks like your raintree is doing well, make sure that apex isn't getting too heavy for the tree. I found that I had to cut mine and restart my apex as I let the branches get too big up there. It only takes a season...
Is that a hops hornbeam? And your elm looks great!

I believe so JudyB. I will get it in 2- 3 days! I am so excited!

Thanks for your tip. I have mostly trimmed the upper part at least twice a year; the lower part one or less than once a year. I just found out BRT is also grown in my motherland (Vietnam), and it is called "Me keo". "Me" is called because its leave looks like tamarind. Actually they are in the same family. I don't know why it has "keo" in the name!

Is that a hops hornbeam?
It looks like, doesn't it?

And your elm looks great!

Thanks

I removed all of the overhead misty systems this morning to prepare for September work on those young KBP and JBP. Because I have so many, it is better to start working in the end of August to finish all work in September.

In the middle of work, I found those trees are charmed under the intense sunlight, so I had to take the pictures!

After less than one hour work, I sweated profusely! I had to stand beneath the shade of this jubilee tree (called Chinese apple). It is bearing a lot of fruits (I guess more than 1000 fruits). The fruit is very sweet and full of vitamin C and fiber. It is really an excellent treat!

The fruit is big! (my hands are long and big for the Asian :))

Thanks. I also think it is Korean hornbeam, but the previous owner told me it was Japanese hornbeam!

Definitely not japanese hornbeam, I have several seedlings of both kind from Bill Valavanis. Japanese have much longer leaves.

I got the pomegranate pieces yesterday. I wish I could also get the root, but the worker said he just cut the trunk flat right at the soil line! However, whatever I got, they are fabulous. I got 3 pieces and my big brother get 6 pieces.
The trunk is really big and heavy but so beautiful! I can see the twisted trunk. It has hollow trunk naturally! I really like it!
I soaked them into the vitamin B1 diluted solution for almost 24 hours (with plastic bag coverage) and put them into the plastic pot this afternoon. It was really hot today! It took me almost 2 hours to finish the job! The soil mix is pumice: coarse sand: mini pine bark with ratio 1:1:1

The 1st one.

Don't forget to place one misty head into the pot, then cover the whole pot and cutting with a large plastic bag. It is placed into the shady place.

The 3rd one is the smallest one, but it still about 20 cm diameter.

My big brother told me that this tree should be around years old!
Now, I hope all of them will be survived! :)
