Mame contest idea

Would we post a thread in the contest section or out in the appropriate forum, don't suppose it matters but thought I would ask anyway.

I cut my two Mini Thai's today right back hoping to take advantage of the season as early as possible, the other still has vibrant bracts showing and I can't bring myself to cut it back just yet. The more I look at it the more I'm not sure it is well suited to a Mame style with bigger leaves an such.

Yeah I have hacked 2 of mine back and repotted the other, already seeing swelling buds so this is good news. Need to cut one back and repot another and just let them do their thing for a while but I am still not convinced the B. Alexandria is suited to a mame.

Mainly that it's growth may not be suited to a smaller tree, it kind of looks a touch leggy for a mame and the only real way I may get away with it is in a cascade or semi and even then the proportions just seem a bit too big. It predictably dumped all of it's leaves after repotting so now it is a waiting game to see if it survived the root chop but the existing bones on it are not so bad so I'm tempted to leave it larger.
I will say though that this variety certainly is not one of the leggier Bougs about and does look a good one for bonsai it is just that mame pushes that extreme even further.

I can get my hands on some cheapo buxus(I think, started with a B anyway) pero seems a bit bland for my tastes.

That is the part I hate, waiting to pot a tree in "The Pot"

I have SOOOOOO many trees like that right now........

I'm still looking for pots for the ones I have for this contest. I'm even thinking about maybe making one myself. I've never made pots, but figured why not start with a mame sized pot!

Yeah, I have one pot that I will definitely use and have seen a couple other nice ones but am going to hold off on them so chances are they will be gone by the time I want them but hey-ho.
I have another I could use but doubt it is right for a Bougie. Still we have time.

Never tried to cram something into a pot this small though so hopefully the roots will develop as much as possible during the year.
I'd love to make a pot but can't see it happening, maybe out of some type of cement or plaster.

I was planning on using clay making it at home and then taking it to a local potter to have it fired. Cement would work too and if you wet it enough you can get a fairly smooth finish. I guess you can die the cement to the color you want..hmmm

I'd be tempted to mix the cement with glitter grout, lol.
I know this area has a history of pottery that is quite rich but not sure how much of it is catered to glazed stone ware, plus my language skills aren't up to scratch.
I like buying pots so I think I will stick with that plan, just ordered a small pot with the contest in mind, it should come with a nice Azalea. :D

That would look interesting!!!

That is great they sent a free tree with the pot!??!?! :p:p:p:p:p

I have bought trees before for just the pot and didn't care for the tree lolol

Today is the deadline to enter isn't it? I better pick some stuff and take pics.

For what we paid for the tree it should come with a free pot, just tacked the mame one on to the order because it seemed more like paying for shipping than a pot. :p
This will be my first proper tree that is not from a nursery or mallsai so I'm a bit excited, birthday present though from the wife so this is my shot to prove I can keep something worthy alive. It's not mega bucks but a couple of hundredish gets me a trunk and root flare that takes time, I think I have paid more for a pot.

Pruned this fella back hard hopeing to let it pop some buds a bit lower to build the main branches with later on

That is why I cut mine back now, see what grows where and take advantage of the time we have as best as possible.

I think though I will have to withdraw my third entry, want to keep it as a bigger tree if I can.

Nice! setting the wife up for bigger purchases later :p:cool: @Starfox

I still haven't found my 3rd tree, but I was contemplating......a rosemary
