Mame contest idea

So we know what to beat.

No worries...

All fun yes?

Yep, bingo, works for me. @defra 's whole schema was to have fun.

I think...the one having it a pot...a smaller bonsai pot gave ones pause...with it being the second step in the contest

Hearing it's a mame pot...he's at a disadvantage for sure.

Or think about it this way, I will know before the first deadline whether or not my trees survive the root reductions required to get to this size. Now I'm 2/3 at the point of growing and developing branching. This is a long-term contest, not just a get-it-in-a-pot with no concern if it survives afterwards type of deal.

Just ordered the pot. Now the search for some material begins. I like to do things backasswards I guess.

I'm planning on entering, I see mention of another "entry thread" is there another thread I don't know about? thanks!

I'm glad the contest isn't over until August 20th. I'm still debating over my Boston Ivy cutting. It's very raw which was why I original felt it perfect...there is no training to its branches. But above the foliage you can't see that. It appears to be "cute". It has an ugly knee root that needs addressed...and I can't even begin to wire it until it's dormant because the leaves make me itch! So...I will ponder...I worry what possibly I can do to a tree I can only work while dormant. How that is a huge handicap for a contest. But...time frame is three years. So...that is what...two winters? Right...it wasn't the cutting I thought I was getting. The one I had seen was a dormant just waking up photo. So I could see a direction with it. Knowing the mess that wasn't hidden.This one...I scratch my head and just see a mess of what would be branches tangled in a mess under the foliage. Foliage that makes me itch. It's like a hot mess as Jim Lewis would say about roots...but in the canopy area. Lol

The tangle of vine branches...are so confusing looking at it through the foliage...that it's a tree I think falls into the classification of the Virginia Creeper I currently own. Ugly out of leaf...I'm questioning my ability to tame it to offer a good silhohette come final showing of contest ends which this tree will be dormant by. It's a tree that questions my ability...believe it or not. Never discussed hot mess canopies with Jim...I would so love to hear his thoughts right now.

Well after running across a Potentilla at a Lowe's that's what I'm going to work with. Now to hunt down two more. With 3 of them I should be able to get one to the end. I hope!

I'm officially in on this as well. I'm going to need 3 new pots, this is going to be fun!

As for the trees well you guys know I have a few already that I am considering.

The first one I am entering for sure (and I'll post it in the entry thread once I know the tree is clear to enter). It is Shrubby False Buttonweed. From my yard. Nothing has been done to it yet. Collected, and put in this little bottle bottom SIZE: Approximately 2.5 inches:20170427_121307.jpg

My next I would like to enter although I don't think I should. What do you guys think? This was bought at a bonsai nursery. It was a cutting initially and looks like it has had some styling via pruning already. It has never seen wire. The branches are a complete mess, going to take a ton of work to get this right. But idk how I feel about entering it. Here is the tree to share, lmk what you guys think on this one:20170516_084103.jpg

For my 3rd tree, I have yet to acquire it. For myself I left that spot open to find a new tree just for this contest. Glad I have a little more time to find one b/c I've been so busy I'm going to need it!

Cheers!

Outside in the greenhouse with my bent tipped tweezers trying to make heads or tails out of that Boston Ivy cutting. I imagine removal of the majority of the branching will be in order to recreate something. Though possibly keeping one branch that runs the longest. The remainder will have to go at this point. To create a better visual appealing silhohette when bare. So...in all honesty the challenge to make it look half decent at the end of the challenge is a challenge that...basically is what the contest is about. @defra ... Is it acceptable material? It's one in a long shot will be an end of the road contender. But here on my shelf now...might as well make the best of it. Even though my fear is...a butt ugly stick in the pot. It will allow others a better chance at a vote. Lol

@Cadillactaste go for it !

@StoneCloud
Looks like two good contenders !

This is going to be fun and we gonna learn a bunch !
Thanks @defra ...I must say...it's something I've chewed over all night. This material will surely challenge myself. But...if I can make it look half nice in silhohette it will be an achievement and a feather in my cap. Because...it won't be a cascade. Which...the material I thought I was getting would have been. I think the material alone took the wind out of my sails...thinking it was something else. But...rebuilding and creating something is what bonsai is all about...I've two winters to wire and hope to take into a direction that will look remotely like something. Worse case...it's cute in leaf hiding an ugly mess. And it's material now on my bench. Note to self...know for a fact you are buying the tree in photo and not some other material. But...I think challenging yourself...is what this contest is about. This will surely try to get the best of me for sure.

Thanks!!!!! Once I find the 3rd tree I'll let you know. I'm excited!!

@Cadillactaste Just a thought regarding the leaves making you itch.......if you want to get started on the wiring, maybe try wearing latex gloves? Maybe you have thought of this already but figured I would throw it out there.

I'm going to be in. Just not sure what all with yet. 3 for sure so maybe one lives 3 yrs. LOL
Going to be in the woods all weekend and will be scouting a late collection. I know I'll have a tropical or two for the others. Something with green at least.

I have disposable latex. But...honestly they don't cover ones wrists and upper arms. And I climb into a tree. I also can't figure out the mess entirely. One doesn't defoliate Boston Ivy. I did discover that in my research. Honestly...I have 4 winters to style it. 20-2-2020 is final date. So even if I only wire in winter I still have time to create something if I remove every branch it has to offer currently,which most likely might happen. I can't even make out the mess at the top of the tree. As to main branching coming off the trunk. It's so compact and the foliage hides everything. I won't be able to until it goes dormant. But you did have a point...and I appreciate your thoughtfulness in offering a possible solution. Once I know what is there...maybe I might be able to have more of an understanding of it.At this point...I can't see much where it's so compacted and add foliage at the apex area.

@defra So I just went back and read the rules again. So entries can't already be 6" or under, even if it is just from a nursery, not worked at all? Rules said if it isn't already a mame. I didn't know if that meant not in a mame pot, or not that small. Sorry.
