Let's see those dwarf Alberta spruce jams

Sorce, I have a super dwarf Alberta spruce originally from Iseli that currently stands as about a 7" Christmas tree shaped tree. Must be a mutation from the original mutation(s).

I picked up a medium sized spruce that was reduced today and as I went through the checkout they had a huge rack of these, I asked the lady said they're available for a charity donation. So for a couple of quid I got 4 to mess around with. Here are the befores:

@sorce

So I cracked and scooped one up on clearance. Going for a twin trunk on this I think. I have to start work in an hour but once I'm settled at my desk later today, I'm gonna get to styling.

I have learned a lot from this thread thanks everyone for the input on them. I love trying something new and this will be a first go at this species.

From everyones posts I have learned this:

Alberta Spruce trees are more defined "individuals" than other species. I don't believe alberta spruce can have twins, or triplets, etc :p:p

Will I chop the top and gamble? Maybe

Will I leave a poodle tuft at the top in fear of losing it? No

Deadwood? Absolutely!!!

That is unless this tree fucks my whole plan up!! (happens often)

Standard boring proof it exists lol........updates later or tomorrow

So just finished finding the base on this guy. I took half the pot/soil away from the top. Typical of nursery material. Tons of circling roots, thick ones, some that still have to be worked on etc.....

I haven't touched the foliage just yet. There are few directions I'm contemplating, and with the fact that growing branches is slow, I'm not doing any major pruning yet until I'm sure on the design. I'll give it the standard "initiation trim" into bonsai and get rid of some of the crap but not going hard.

From what I see I will change the planting angle for sure, but not buy much.

In the first pic you can see a nasty root clump that I removed. There was one higher on the other side as well.

nice fat trunk and nebari. keep us updated!

Worked this guy over at a recent club meeting. It was in the clearance section of the nursery where we meet. Since taking the pics I have adjusted some branches for movement and placement and wired a bit more to better form the pads, and will be removing the apex at the top left that crosses in front of the deadwood (as sugggested in another post for it). If it pushes nicely in spring and I get some backbuds it will be a keeper.

Thanks! I was happy with the trunk upon discovering it. I've been pulling needles and giving it a general cleaning today. Maybe about half way done. so much fun!

I don't think I'm going to reduce this thing too hard this year at all. I'll cut it back some and add some negative space and define the two trunks better. Going to choose of of those leaders at the top to chop off also.

I'll post some updated pics tonight or tomorrow !

@sorce so take a look 2 new buds in just a few days! Maybe working the roots first caused the new push? Maybe I'm tripping? I'm still learning!

@Rose Mary

I have thinned it out some and will do more today. You guys think it can take a chop of the apex right now?

This years DAS if you didn't see it yet....
Don't remember....

Dropping a few needles but pulling thru.
Love the trunks sizes and couldn't pass it up, even though there is NOTHING else going for this tree!20180127_163635.jpg

And my big bottom cliff hanger, left upright....little Brown is on one branch but those tips are good.

This one is about 25% less healthy than I'd like it to be....but It may see a basket by summer.

@sorce This one will make a nice double trunk!!

That is what got me on the one I picked out was the trunk. I had no idea what I was going to do with it but I knew that if the trunk was nice, well the rest of the tree would come w/ time.

I'm planning on fertilizing the S***T out of mine this spring and summer and keeping it very well watered. Going to OD on the miracle grow (double or triple recommended).

I did that last season, and my trees just ripped!!! I think @M. Frary is infamous for this though he doses way more than even I do haha! I followed his suit though more timidly lmao and it works!!

Not sure when I'll chop it though, still up in the air on that one!

I chopped it a few days ago and it's doing well.

That 2nd leader you see in the pic below is going to go also. I'm going to keep the right thicker leader as the new apex. I also chopped the apex off to create a new lower apex. (you can see this in the 2nd pic)

Going to go for an informal upright with this one. I tried hard to see and create something along the lines of a Literati but this tree just didn't have what it took.

Or maybe my FVG's are smoked out?

Update:

Branch selection and wiring will come in the next few days along with getting it outta that folger's red pot lol

Might do a raft, right now prune-testing to see if it will survive pruning since it's nearly impossible for them to grow here :(

@bonsaiBlake this is the good thread.....

How in the hell do you end up ressurecting an October the person thread?

Are you ok?

Hallucinating?

Too many seagulls?

Ocean crazy?

Tired of the North Star?

Are seals looking sexy?

Thirsty?

Saltwater drinking contest?

Treeless PTSD?

Don't hide when you check in!

Bought this tree a little before christmas last year and decided to go nuts on it.
I chopped it, removed a lot of branches and wired them. Did a repot early spring this year and actually managed to put it in a pot that is way too small.
I removed the wire because I did such a horrible job... I'll redo it next fall/winter. Somehow it seems to be pulling trough tho o_O
