Let's see those dwarf Alberta spruce jams

I saw this one at HD and was seduced by the trunk. For $11 bucks I view it as practice material.

I should have read all these posts before I went to work on it. I probably would have not touched the roots and only worked on the styling. I kept about 75% of the root ball.

I get the sense that these trees don't like it when you mess around with their roots but they will take a decent amount of styling work. I've still got some more work to do on the upper branches and I'm not too happy about the double trunk but it just kind of went that way before I knew what was happening. I'm still feeling my way around.

I'm going to add some garden moss on top of the soil to keep the surface roots from drying.

Bump... for the most wonderful time of the year.

Kill me if I ever make that joke again.

Well, been on here five years and never had an interest in DAS. Still don't. But, I haven't bought a nursery stock tree in a couple years, got a gift card to Lowes, what the hell, let's do it. Missed the Christmas tree grow out, but figured I'd throw my ring in the hat anyway. See how all you sapsuckers compare to my superior intellect and education. And speaking of sap...

1) Now I remember why I don't do piney things- this thing bleeds everywhere.
2) I wired the damn thing, came back three hours later and it it straightened itself out. Did it again, same thing. Do you have to use a wire gauge that's thicker than the branch? Thinking about wiring the wire than securing the branches using bread ties. 🤔
3) I got really high and played with it for three hours- that's cheaper than a movie, and it may live!

Now note the tag:
4) DAS are communal trees, best to grow three together (patent pending on this new technology).
5) I plan on following directions and baking this biotch- 6+ hours of direct Florida sunshine!
6) Grown by Flowerwood Nursery- just 30 minutes from me. It says '1 year guarantee' on it, so if it doesn't work out I can go there and ask for a replacement, or I can drive by their place and chuck it on their doorstep with a note that says "You suck!"
7) My brilliance is in the pairing of the pot. I'm going for the 'snow storm damaged, aged alpine' look, so I decided my wife's deep round oriental pot suited it well. Yes/No?

I think you got the snow storm damaged part right. The sticky part? That's a self-defense mechanism. Next step, they feign death...

Feign death huh, interesting. My tree that I posted near the beginning of this thread was fine so to speak for two years and then last year every needle turned brown and fell off and for two months I thought it was dead but I didn’t throw out and the. It made a full recovery and is doing very well now.
I mean every needle fell off like a larch.
anyone else experience this?

It wasn’t an “Alberta spruce” but a regular p. glauca. I had one that did this three years ago. It grew back all the needles the next spring. I’d take a picture, but it’s under snow right now.

I have a rule for my tropicals, never throw a tree away until it's been dead for six months, for that very reason. And, I've had several varieties do that to me that went really dry, just like they do in the wet-season/dry-season part of the world. Once they enter that dry phase they won't revive until the time requirements are satisfied and often that's quite a while and just as I was reaching for the pot to use it elsewhere...

Dang it!

I wish I knew that these trees have a Lazarus gene. This one lost all of its needles in August and I pitched it. It had just started to fill in nicely too. Live, die and learn, I guess.

Anyone catch the Mirai stream yesterday? Waiting for them to upload it to the archive to check it out

That's not the type of trunk to go fucking around with!

Sorce

Dude, you wouldn't believe how many of these fat fucks they had! I spent at least an hour comparing. I need an excuse to go back and get a couple more. No kidding, they all had these big ol' 4" flared bases and really healthy foliage.
