About Princess Persimmon

I was already looking for one but I learned a lot from this thread so I will be less critical of the price point, thanks for all the information.

You guys think the root cuttings will be ok in a bucket of water for a couple days ? I was reporting my big persimmon grove and it started to rain so I didn’t have time to put them in soil and it’s raining again today so I think I will do it tomorrow. Thanks ! Tommy

- How do you handle these root sections from this picture onwards? Do you just cover them sith substrate leaving only a stub stick out? Or do you have most of the future trunk above ground/ What about aftercare to get them to grow?
- These are big roots. Yet I read multiple times that rootwork needs to be gentle. Any thoughts on how to handle this sort of work? I have 1 now, which I repotted, gently, and I saw straight away a very big 2-inch roots belowground, which I would love to take off eventually.
They throw long thick tap roots - almost tuberous - but as long as the parent plant has enough fine roots, they seem to handle removal of the thick roots well.

Do you have a picture of the persimmon you have in your yard?
I'll just throw this photo into this thread, since it is the largest female princess persimmon I have ever seen. It's in the parking lot of a local nursery here in NC.

Give me the GPS coordinates. Will be there with a shovel ASAP.

@Pitoon was just there a week ago. I told him to pick up some princess persimmons, but I have not idea if he did so. He was busy with another special product order...

(and by "local" I mean two hours drive for me)

I tossed that photo there because it is a good reference point for what these look like if you let them grow unfettered. American persimmon is a relatively large tree. Fruiting persimmons (like Fuyu) are decent sized fruit trees. Princess persimmon is a large and robust bush-sized tree.

Would love to see a trunk pic without leaves. Show us your trunk baby

Similar minds think alike. I was just wondering the same. Next time I am there, I will ask David (the owner) to spot me while I crawl under the branches (so I don't get run over). I'll bring an old Army blanket or two :) I have no idea if there is a single trunk under there, or a massive multi-trunk. I assume the later, but you never know.

@Bonsai Nut after loosing all the PP I got from @NaoTK from that hard freeze I was thinking to give up on them.......I decided to give them one more try. So, yes I did pick some up when I was there.

I will put up a thread shortly.

Here is the tree leafless. He planted a male off to the right to increase fruit yield.

I forgot to come back and post a link to the book I shared a page from in post #174, but it’s cheap and a decent resource. Google translate does a decent job of making it understandable. It covers propagation techniques and as a bonus, Kinzu!

Agreed, similar plan for me with google translate. The series is pretty inexpensive for the information contained. 1,275 Yen this year at the Green Club vendor area in Kokufu. Same price for each of the series. The one I picked up is for Prunus Mume, IMG_2541.jpeg

I wish I could get a copy of that one! Do you know of a site that I can make the purchase from?

@Pitoon The full series is available on Amazon kindle. I keep buying them as I build up Amazon no-rush credit.

Here’s the prunus mume one:

I actually have a few of them as physical books as well, but I’ve found the kindle ones more useful for working with Google translate. As you can see this one also covers Chojubai.

Thanks for the link, but I'm old school and prefer to have the actual magazine in my hands.

If I can't find a hard copy, at least I can get the digital version.

They’re often offered on FB bonsai auctions…. There may be one now but maybe that was last week.

I seem to recall @Canada Bonsai having them too but could be mistaken.

I have the ume and persimmon ones and would second that they’re worth a look
