IMG_0360.JPG This summer I got a forest planting of bucida spinosa at a workshop. I repotted it today because of what I saw when I lifted it out of the 5" shallow plastic pot it was in. Encircling the root mass was--I kid you not--a 42" root, with numerous over-long associates. I had hoped to space it out and re-order the trees, but the roots are inseparable. Ergo, it stays this size with the occasional haircut. Astute observers will note a [gasp] even number of trees, but I have been having a rough couple of days, and doing 'Sophie's Choice' on which little guy got yanked just didn't suit my mood.

I count 7? If the one 3rd from the right is actually 1 tree with 2 trunks, then I think they are close enough to the soil to count them as 2. I wouldn't remove any of them personally.

No, they're actually separate, but I agree, I like them just as they are. Philosophically, I don't put a lot of stock in rules, bonsai or otherwise. If I have a tree that resembles a scalene triangle, it's a freak of coincidence, rather than adherence to classical form. I may think differently later, but I also don't care about competitive exhibitions.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

@Oscar Soriano - I have no idea what your trees are, and I'm usually a "good guesser". Any possibility going back to vendor and asking? Looks more tropical than an outdoor hardy tree. Let it grow out a season, and find out if it needs cold winter rest, or the sub-tropical treatment.

@Bonsai toto - Beakea is an interesting genus we don't see often at all in the USA, nice. I will be interested in how it develops, I want to see flower pictures please, when it blooms.

Just found this thread, already disassembled the only forest I own, haven't got pictures yet. Sorry. Will share as soon as I put it back together next year.

It's a dawn redwood forest, 9 trees, and was suffering from drought and neglect when I bought it from a deceased MBS member's estate. I divided it into groups, and planted each half in large Anderson flats to recover. So maybe in spring 2018, or maybe 2019.

This is my first attempt at a forest. 9 Korean hornbeams carpinus coreana. First pic is this February 2017 just after I planted them, and the last we’re taking today others are in between.

I don't do them often, my first was a disaster because I tried to cram them into a way too small pot, but here are a couple I really am hopefully of. The first is a very small little leaf linden that I assembled from seedlings that grew in my yard, I like the very small compact growth on these trees, they grow ridiculously slow. The second is a very dense 50 + mixed Japanese Maple Forest I put together from my leftover crop I struck from 2010. I got so many seedlings that year that my yard is full of very young maples. This one was quite challenging to assemble and is years away from looking anything close to what I envision. Because it's mixed maples the composition looks very uneasy to the eyes most of the summer, but the fall display is incredible, every possible color seems to be represented. BTW they are shown on the same table top which is 20" round for scale
Update on my 48 tree mixed Japanese maple forest after its first styling this fall. Coming along very nicely, can't wait for spring to

You totally need an Alaska scroll and a Hawaii accent.

Good thing those places go a little better with JM.....

Or you'd have to switch em to rubrum!

Nice!

Wow that's a lotta trees, but is all that wiring necessary ???
Yes, they needed to be wired because the apexies of each tree were all over the place. The trees could not be straightened when I created the composition since they were not well rooted at the time, now the trunks are a bit straighter and apexes better align in relation to each other. This is a representation of a young forest, in most cases of young forests the trunks are pretty straight as each tree is racing to the top of the forest canopy. Here's a picture from last fall, as a whole it looks good, but if you focus on each tree, it's rather unsightly.

48 trees was not intentional, I just packed as many of my spare seedlings into the pot as I could. I've lost 2-3 over the last two years, which was expected. But current count is 48, hopefully I don't lose anymore, but I think I'm covered if I do.
