Boreal Forrest Idea

You know, you probably do not need to use multiple different potting media. Just use a pumice, akadama blend for the entire planting. You will be watering frequently enough that "special mixes" for those that want more water won't be necessary. All the tree species you mentioned will thrive in a Pumice-Akadama mix. No need to over complicate the potting media.
Interesting yes of course… the one thing I’m trying to figure out also is , do I put the media under the plants on the rock then exterior roots clamp down with muck to give roots the direction to flow down into the container or do I mix it with much

Depends, it your future vision has the rock bare, except for roots, then no potting medium under the roots, just tie or clamp the roots to the rock, then cover the rock & roots with muck, which will eventually wash away.

If the rock is to serve as a tray or bowl to hold the plant & roots, then you put some soil under the roots and more over the roots. Here the rock is merely serving as a pot or tray for the plants.

Yeah I think the latter option is what I had in mind , of course there will be other trees in the container below too.. going to construct the wood container soon and set up tie downs on the rock. Here’s some Trippy brainstorm electronic trance.

Rock tied downs are in with some screens over holes for drainage. I cut a metal rod and drilled into the lace rock for support at the angle I want it at. Once I secure those supports in the container , I will waterproof then drill holes for drainage and tiedowns. After that I’ll put feet underneath which I’ll be completing this. Will be ready to be assembled next week with trees, and dressing of mixed sphagnum and moss. Ferns and other accent plants will Added throughout and ad hoc when I get more of them

Decided I’ll use that tray for a different purpose… build something alittle more sturdier. Cedar wood and screen door mesh. I have glued the support blocks in for wood. Staples the screen door mesh. Also have muck to plaster another rock together currently not pictured. This weekend commences the build

Holy crap! That is impressive. Great work. Can’t wait to see it leafed out!
thanks me too.. it took a lot of planning and awesome feedback from everyone who chimed in .. not completely done yet still need to put some ferns and stuff on there.. maybe add a tree or three in future. I ended up not using spruce cause there were too over powering .. I’ll use them for something else.. I got lucky with the stuff I put in there.. just right amount of roots for deciduous and larch only too off alittle and left soil in tact.

If you can find some young small spruce, they might work well in the foreground.

Really looking forward to seeing this planting after a first flush of growth. I appreciate that you had the gall to ignore the nay-sayers and try it.

Thanks me too.. I do have stuff on hand incase the current trees don’t make it . Never know to be replaced next year if needed.. yeah I may have a source for the spruce just gotta see

I like this a lot. Reminds me of the land in the Adirondacks where my family has a few camping acres. Looking forward to seeing it all leafed out.
Thanks still a Long long way to go.. but pretty much to age the trees in wood grow box and on the rock.. I have replacements of each type of needed to add in or replace anything that may die. It’s not finished , some may scoff at this design because rock placement isn’t ideal for Japanese aesthetic and looks forced or mix is confusing .. but it’s still a WIP.

Looks great so far! I personally really like your rock placement. It feels quite natural. Looking forward to watching this continually evolve!
