The fundamental problem with COVID-19 is the question, “Is it potentially deadly to otherwise healthy people?” Most healthy people who get it, are mildly to moderately ill from the virus. Some are hammered by it. There’s an element of the unknown.

I know of a couple of cases where healthy people in their 30s & 40s have become very ill. One 40-year old that’s on a vent, in a coma, within 48 hours of showing symptoms. He’s been in that state for five days. He received a blood plasma treatment on Weds, but as of last night, has not shown signs of recovery.

Hopefully, the public health professionals will be able to do analysis on what worked and what didn’t, without political agendas and personal bias getting in the way.
As of yesterday, this fellow is semi-conscience when they turn off the sedation drip, able to answer yes/no question with a foot wiggle, or eye blinks, able to shed tears when he sees his family through the glass, has the vent operating at 40% pressure, with hopes of extubation in the next day or two. It is very difficult to be intubated and conscience, which is why they generally sedate these folks for the duration. Nine days in a coma, and now six days post-plasma treatment. Good thing he was healthy going into this.

And just when you thought you had seen and heard it all..

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he is halting funding to the World Health Organization while a review is conducted.
Trump said the review would cover the WHO's "role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of coronavirus."

Everybody is at fault. Just not the POTUS..?

Would that be the same WHO for which the US failed to fill our own seat on the Executive Board since 2018?! And only filled with the Health Secretary in March. We are the largest contributor by far and we don’t even bother to fill our seat? WTF? Who is watching the money?!

Has anyone seen an accurate breakdown of funding by Country? I found a chart from 2012 where The Gates Foundation donated more than the US and China wasn’t even in the top 20. In fact Pakistan contributed more in 2012.

The news has made such a big deal about how much influence China has on the WHO because of all the money they give them. I found a 2018 report which is hard to sort on a mobile but it looks like China only gave $6.3M in the voluntary category and twice that in a deferred category. Compare that with the US at $281M. Gates Foundation at $212M and the Bloomberg Foundation gave more than China at $11M! China is getting away pretty cheap considering SARS and COVID both came out of their backyard!

I hate to agree with the head Ommpa Loompa, but there are definitely some questions that the WHO needs to address. Especially given the likely way underreported cases and deaths in China.

But it would seem that cutting off funding during the middle of a global pandemic is slightly counter productive.

That would be the same and I agree, we need to be involved and this pulling of funding is stupid.
However, the under reported deaths in China, is on the Chinese government, not WHO.
The Chinese government was more interested in the Chinese New Year, their economy, their reputation and not letting bad news out than they were about the health and well being of their citizens. It backfired on them big time and now the whole world is paying for it.

The Chinese stopped air travel from Wuhan to Chinese cities while continuing international flights out of China.

Wuhan to Shanghai = 839 km, Wuhan to Beijing = 1,152 km, Wuhan to Milan = 8,684 km, Wuhan to NY = 12,033 km,

The Coronavirus started in Wuhan yet there is no effect of Coronavirus in nearby Beijing or Shanghai but many deaths in Italy, Iran, European countries and USA. What do you call that? Plain murder? I call that act act of war.

I call it quarantine on everyone from that region, taking temperatures etc.
When we had chinese students returning from chinese new year, they told the university that they were self-quarantining. It was the first we heard about measures against Corona. It was NOT the goverment taking the first actions, it were responsible visitors.

It is not like china kept quiet very long. The EU outbreaks happened after it had become VERY clear that this would be come an issue.

Don't blame the sleepiness of goverments on China or WHO. On 30 January 2020, the WHO Director-General declared the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. Italy registered the first cases in February. Real growth in cases around mid Feb. Germany in March.

March 10, 994 confirmed cases in the USA. What is the message from US President? It hit the world, and we're prepared and we're doing a great job with it, and it will go away, stay calm, it will go away."

Sure. The Chinese and WHO are to blame.

I call it false.

“The claim is false; both Beijing and Shanghai, China’s two most populous cities, have reported confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths since January 2020.”

Also, as Leatherback points out the extreme nature of their lockdown prevented more cases in other areas in China. To what degree? Who knows, I’m sure the Chinese aren’t reporting the accurate totals from other areas.

Good news. Today, he’s off the vent, still in “serious condition,” but recovering.

I don't know exactly what is the roles of the WHO are but I remember talking to co-workers after reading CNN articles and thinking that they are almost like China spokeperson. They pretty much going along with what China wants.

Yes, but they're supposed to be the international interface on health conditions that may spread across boarders and coordinate international cooperation and prompt action. Not cops, not doctors without boarders, an unpolitical agency that can step into any country/jurisdiction to analyze situations that may be beyond the resources of the local authorities, and organize international response for the benefit of the locals and the rest of the world. The same way Ebola was handled. Never perfect, but never a blind eye, either.

Exactly. And as they are not cops, they can only provide information and guidelines and offer assistence. If goverments then hide in the sand and say "this is no biggie, we are prepared and this will go away by itself" WHO is not to blame.

Stop this scapegoat searching in China and WHO. Goverments who took this serious when the warnings came out are now slowly relaxing their measures and might be over the worst. Those that decided to hide in the sand and say "this will blow over, our country does not need anything special" are still in the middle of it.

They pretty much going along with what China wants.
What a nonsense remark. What does china want then? You think china wants the global economy to take a nosedive? It is not as if their production depends on other countries buying their stuff? Stop reading Holliwood plays and return to the real world

nd evidently, you don't know much either. For your information, people of every type and condition have had malaria and been treated with hydoxychloroquine since 1945, and the side effects are well known, almost all of which do not occur if the drug is taken for less than two weeks, and it has a safety record which doctors can refer to before they prescribe it.

And this is why tests are needed to understand the use, and effectiveness:

In the recent Brazil trial, researchers gave chloroquine to 81 COVID-19 patients in a hospital in Manaus. The study involved two groups: One received a high dose of 12 grams of chloroquine over 10 days, the second group received 2.7 grams over five days. Both groups also received the antibiotic azithromycin, which poses its own heart risks.

By the sixth day of the trial, 11 patients had died, and the researchers decided to stop giving the drug to the high-dose group.
