Shohin Japanese Maple [#18]

I'm working on it!! I have nothing yet...but I hope this changes in the short run, meanwhile I will stick away from the "tree thread".
Still feel to be in the stupid phase of buying junk that I hope makes it somewhere in 5 years or more to have trees to refine.

Meantime, I can always look at your maples for inspiration.

I don't generally like shohin sized bonsai BUT that tree is really nice.
Good work and lovely results. Thank you for sharing it.

Nice looking tree. You are lucky that it is very slow growing, otherwise you would have some real issues to contend with on a regular basis. Please don't consider that as a criticism of your tree or your work; its neither. I've had a few Japanese Maples that have grown similar to this and they tend to grow porcupines that are challenging to keep in check.

Early winter update. Still outside in the garden which is extremely unusual for this time of year. Looking at the weather forecast, it appears that likely it may soon go inside my cold, unheated garage for the winter.

To keep it happy and cool over the hottest months of the year, I place it in a larger container with some additional soil. At the end of the season, I just cut off the escaped roots. Some remaining ones can still be seen through the drainage holes.

Another beauty!
Is it getting colder by you? I think it's gonna dip down in mid thirties by me this week. Everything is still outside. But it's been so warm One of my Amurs has buds moving fast, I'm afraid once it gets cold I'm gonna have dieback. I guess not much I can do, there is still months til Spring.

Thanks Brian! Yes it is, although still much milder than it should be. Everything still outside. I don't have anything moving, but I am usually a good 10+ degrees colder than the NY metropolitan area. I do however have some flower bulbs sticking out of the ground as if it was early spring

Just a thought... How about rotating it to the right so the branch is parallel to the pot?

Nonetheless, awesome tree.

Unbelievable tree, great work. Gives the rest of us something to work for.

Max which branch are you referring to? If I rotate to the right, the lower right branch will be poking us straight in the eye.

I have a cutting I want to style towards this kind of look... It is a fatty, has a similar bend in a similarly place... Just took it this Spring, let it grow all year and did the first bit of work on it today... So, fair warning- your tree is the blueprint for developing my cutting! If I even get close I will be happy with the results!

Again your maples trees are pretty outstanding, really love that pot.

So nice.
That stand is super cool, never seen a stand like that one. Suits the tree and the bud color very nicely.

Thanks Juds... er Judy (damn it Al messed me up now!). It is just a chepo Chinese made stand I got many years ago at a convention. I don't think I would use it for a more formal display at an exhibit but for pics it is ok.
