First japanese maple!shohin tips

today i picked up a japaness maple which id like to shohin. Im a fan of thick flared taper, sumo even. Should i plant into the ground or to a bigger pot to work on the trunk? Would you remov any branches at this time or even chop? Im in los angeles ca weather has been warm

Not a bonsai, it's a sapling, trunk chop it ever 1 to 2 years when it's ready I'd say more like 10 years maybe more
