Shohin Clump Japanese Maple

Time for a change of scenery for this clump. I bought this Koyo from Ryan Bell the first time I met him, which I think was 2012, and this is the first time I have actually planted something in it. The scale of the composition works well, I think.

I liked this last pot in the solo shot above, but really was thinking that yellow suited it better as I was scrolling down. Then I got to that last picture and it just looks more sophisticated. That's probably a weird word to use to describe it, but it's definitely a special pairing.

For whatever reason, I feel the movement of the trunks is from left to right, which means the apex of the fattest & tallest tree is going the wrong way. But I could be wrong in my perception. The apex is correct for the movement being right to left.

Are my eyes playing tricks?

Really nice, Brian! This is the first time I've seen this one and I absolutely love it. I think it pairs with this pot better than the yellow one. Good choice 👍🏻

Now you've got me wanting to start a JM clump.... 🤔

Compared to the previous pot, I find this pairing to be more "settled". The "tall-ish" feet of the yellow pot, to me, created a bit of "tension" with too much space between the bottom of the pot and the display table.

Even with characteristic, multi-hued glaze of the Koyo, it's nowhere near "in your face" as the yellow.

Great little pairing!:)

Maybe. It’s a really small composition, photographed pretty close-in. It’s pretty even in person, just needs some fine ramification.
How tall is the tallest tree? Do you find it easy to reduce the leaf size to be in proportion?

I'm just starting to get into JMs.

It’s just a touch over 8” tall. The leaves are pretty small, and should reduce as density increases.

This is such a gorgeous tree. following its progression.
I would love to make a clump like this. will be looking for some seeds...

Clumps like this originate from larger stock cut down to induce new shoots to emerge. From seed, something like this is a 15-year, or more project.

Yep....a little DIY project inspired by @Brian Van Fleet....probably take 15 even with a head start!:D

What if I were to use a few 2-3 year seedlings and bunch them all up together and manage to set a tile over the roots. How long will they take to fuse once the roots get girdled with the tile and new ones grow over it?
