Those big black pines are beauties. Thanks for showing the documentation photos, they are nice to see what you are doing. How was your vacation?

This Yatsubusa black pine is another project for me.
My teacher gave it to me on 11/2/2013.

The soil was not changed for many years!

Its trunk line was not good due to its straightness in upper two-thirds (yellow lines)

I decided to use the lowest branch as continuous trunk from the lower third and to remove the upper two-thirds. It was a good time to cut the big trunk or branch in my area. Instead of cutting it off completely, I partly did it with a handsaw.

The tree was taken out on 11/11/2014 for final removal of the upper two-thirds.

I was right there with you until you went cascade! Nice tree, but I think I'd like to see it developed as informal upright with the crown moving back to the left.

Thanks Brian for your comment. I also looked at the tree as informal upright at first, but due to a strong feeling for the Huangshan's pine trees in Anhui province, China, I decided to follow this route. Most of my young pine seedlings have been trained as such.

I just recognized that I did not do pruning on this JBP yet! It is in 15 gallon pot which I let it be in the way back of the garden! It used to be a long slanting garden specimen (about 1.5 m in length). My friend planned to plant it next to his koi pond, then he changed his mind. He gave it to me few years ago. As soon as it came to my yard, I cut it off way down. It has been trained for bonsai since then.
I pruned it back yesterday.
Before. It still has a large stump from the previous cut.
1.png

After. The trunk base flares out well
2.png

I hope you can see its future!
4.png

I am planning to transplant it to the bonsai pot this Fall.

This is a fun project for me.
My teacher gave me 2 cork elm root cuttings on 4/16/16. I placed each of them in bonsai pot and let them be in shady, optimal humid area since then.

The 1st one.
