Minimum Requirements

I was using them as an example because of this:

Or else what? The implication is that you would no longer meet the minimum requirements so would be removed. Now all of them do that anyway but I was making a point that if someone of their caliber did not meet your "once a year" requirement then would have to leave by the very rules you are stipulating.
I have no idea. I did not think that this forum was for debate of the subject matter. I thought I was addressing the head kahuna about something I feel needs addressing. I also thought that the head kahuna was the person that would respond and that the idea was not so much up for participation by the forum. I see I am wrong.

Carry on.

snip.....of their caliber did not meet your "once a year" requirement then would have to leave by the very rules you are stipulating.

Not meaning to think your an idiot...you really think that once a year, you could not post a progression on a plant that you started with and improved over the year and say something about it. No one ever said it had to be a good tree or that this was some sort of litmus test that if your tree didn't fit the bar you were thrown out. What is wrong with you people are you really that lazy about bonsai?

I worked on this little tree today and styled it. Put some lime sulpher on and gettin it ready for a pot next year. What did you do today?

I'm sure we'd all like to see that. The sticking point is whether or not to require people to do that.

But I love seeing pictures, articles, and advice. I'm slow at learning bonsai and don't have a lot of disposable income so rarely start with good stock. I'm sure I'm an example of someone who doesn't belong but I want to and contribute what I can.
Everyone should want to participate- that’s the point. It doesn’t matter if your best tree is not an award winning example of bonsai.
Post it anyway. Get ideas to make it better.
This is a project tree. I have made threads on it. Not great- when I look back a year though I am proud of my progress.6A45577A-791A-4478-BE56-F7995C9E6714.jpeg

I respectfully withdraw my proposal for increased participation at Bonsainut.

After rereading the last five pages, it has occured to me that if all those I find loud mouthed and rude and those that think they are passing off good information, if they were all dong their thing and really learning and showing such great improvement, I would have nothing to do.

So continue to start your information with "I heard" and "I read" and I don't have a photo of how I did this, but you can trust me cause I'm telling you how it's done.

See ya all on the forum.

I finished cleaning up a couple trees for the Carolina Bonsai Expo next weekend. Anything new going on around here?

I took this tree:

to Atlanta to meet with the other members who are putting in trees for the NC Expo to practice setting up our club display for the show.

BVF, are you going to be there this year?

I have always wanted to go to one of the Carolina's. Would be cool to catch an exhibit there. Do the Carolina's typically exhibit their trees on the end of the long side of the stand?

Ha, yes. I sent the actual stands on ahead, but figured this was good enough to not get banned from the site. Fingers crossed...😬

No. It always falls on my wedding anniversary, so if I want to make it to the next anniversary, I send trees with others. Our club had almost no response to the calls for entry this year, and so we put together a short-notice Shohin display last weekend.

I went from no involvement to sending 4 trees and stands, and arranging the display. The show is by invitation, and if you pass one year, you’re pretty much out. Hopefully next year we will have a better plan, starting a bit earlier. Last year’s display was a “miss”; this year will be pretty traditional, in a non-traditional show, but we’re in.

we’re always traditional. This year Ron Lang is going to be the judge. I hope he does well.

Not just that they didn't share a tree there...that's an unnecessary requirement.

But you can't recall them posting theirs anywhere here.

I think that's the commonality.

Voiceless voices.

Sorce
Your not even close.

I can tell you why. But I'll save it for now.

There is a commonality in that thread and it is surprising to me.

Does anyone know what it is?

I was going to up the ante and offer a custom shohin stand for the winner. I decided to go back and reread the entire thread. Good thing I did. I have a few people on ignore and there was actually a break in the commonality. Had I not gone back and read it I would have missed it.

That's your only clue.

Smoke! Al! I don't hang out here as much as I used to, much due to factors that have nothing to do with the site itself. I'm also not the most knowledgeable, nor the most tutored, nor the most artistic, nor the most seasoned "denizen" of these depths. I'm seldom interested in the "social media" aspect of the web either, preferring - in my older generation way - "actual" reality in interpersonal relations, rather than "virtual" reality.

And yet, I still check in from time to time to see what's happening with folks I've come to know and like and admire here, and often in real life as well - as I have with you, Smoke. I also come here to see if there might be any further need for whatever knowledge or wisdom I can offer ... and yet, it's not always clear that the interest is there, even when the need is ....

Although I've had some great times over the years enjoying off-topic stuff in the Tea House, (and whatever it was called before it was tamed into political-correctness with that silly monicker), my main reason for coming here over the years was only secondarily to make and grow some bonsai-related connections to people that I liked, and occasionally had met. Primarily I came here and stayed because it seemed I had a wee bit of experience and knowledge - and inspiring bonsai beauty - to offer to those interested in this fabulous hobby/art/obsession/addiction that has meant and offered so much in my life.

The contributions I have made here on BNut are contributions of which I am very proud, especially my four tutorials, my significantly extensive galleries, and my starting the "Five-Plus Year Progression" thread, as well as many lesser threads.

The fact that many have come here without even bothering to explore such real treasures that I and many others like you have shared, is sadly indicative of the corrupting lure of "Artificial Intelligence"... yes - "Artificial", indeed! Unfortunately, their trees will not be "Artificial" ... they will be living - in reality - or dead ... and they may be impressively beautiful and inspiring - or not ... independent of whatever their wishful-thinking/narcissism projects onto their reality.

Smoke! Enjoy your trees as the works of art that they are! They are the result of YOUR art, and YOUR application of that art - long and lovingly cultivated! If the site annoys you, let it go, and tend to your trees, and enjoy them immensely every chance you get! Most here have no idea what it would be like to begin to see a bonsai through your eyes, nor ever even hope to create one. You have lived this art fully, and still do so - how fortunate you are!!!

Quite a testimonial. Thank you.

I only wish I could get others to see what I see. But alas, the world has changed, and not for the good. Respect is not taught any longer in the home, and both parents working has allowed our young one to grow up not respecting the work that has come before them. Bonsai has become so mainstream, hah, someone actually thinks it should be more so, they must have been doing bonsai for a couple years, that now unless your superman fresh back from Japan, you are nothing. People only know, what you can do based on some photo's on a web site that probably half of this forum views on a phone.

Let it go...thank you.

Start your own forum. Then you can implement whatever rules suit you.

Or, if you're truly bored...just go away.

This is the only true and correct answer!

Many years ago I was having a discussion much like this thread, but not about bonsai. A friend interrupted with the question; “Do you like to eat chicken?” I said yes and he asked if it wasn’t hard on my teeth. I thought he was nuts but I decided to see where he was going with this. “Don’t the bones hurt your teeth?” We went on to discuss that I ate the meat and spit the bones out. That’s how I view this forum- a lot of meat and a few bones to disregard.

I feel that to criticize this forum because it doesn’t live up to your ideals is rude and a great disservice to BN who puts a lot of time and effort into providing a platform for us to share our enjoyment of bonsai. People of true intellect build up others.
