Well I'll be.....

Is this a joke?

y. The show is by invitation, and if you pass one year, you’re pretty much out. Hopefully next year we will have a better plan, starting a bit earlier.

Did you write this to be exactly the same ridiculous thing that is going on here?

Must be a lot of politics in that club since it's very governmental to use fear to get results.

Here we have a show, made just a bit less good, because of demands.

The same way this site will go of this "rule" pans out.

Since no one wants to see a half inch of new growth.

Which is all you get with a "good for bonsai" yearly update that has been requested.

So....

This is all a joke @Smoke , or you can't see the folly in your plan?

Is this really an issue? I mean, are there really people who join a bonsai forum and hang around for 3+ years only to pester and annoy? If so, that is some true dedication to trolling. Like, Master Level, Hardcore, Long Con Trolling. Ironically, its almost as though they would be approaching their trollcraft in a very bonsai-like manner. Since I don't really know any of you that well yet, I'm not sure if Smoke is referencing specific individuals or just a trend that is upsetting him. I honestly can't fathom why anyone would bother joining this forum if not to share pics, obtain knowledge, and post progress over time, share learned wisdom / repeat. If what Smoke says is true, I suppose I would agree there are so very many better places on the internet to go and troll.

That being said, I am still having a really fulfilling and rewarding time reading threads that started almost a decade ago and seeing peoples' progress from then to now. Whatever moderation style that has been utilized thus far has resulted in some really amazing content for a greenhorn like me. And the douchebaggery that inevitably creeps in to some threads is not so annoying to me. It just helps remind the newcomer that you are all real people, not Gods (even though your creations are all really fucking amazing.)

No, Sorce, the shiw BVF is referring to is the Carolina Expo bonsai show put on by the North Carolina Arboretum. They invite about a dozen of the clubs in the Southeast to exhibit. The clubs then select trees to enter. Each club gets a limited amount of display space. For example, the Atlanta Bonsai Society gets a 16 foot table. We can choose to put whatever we want in that table. Some clubs will put a lot of trees on their table, some will choose to show fewer.

The number of clubs allowed to show is limited because of the limited floor space at the venue. The clubs represent North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and I think Virginia and West Virginia. The event has been going on for over 20 years, and is considered a high quality regional event.

So this is an actual thing where people put lesser quality trees in a show at short notice to be sure to get invited back again.

This is by definition creating a lesser show due to fear of not being let in next year.

Couple layers to this idea.

Let's not get confused.

To simply make a radical change and alter everyone's pattern of how they wish to use the site* simply because you, "as a reader and a viewer", doesn't like it seems very unfair to me.
While I can agree that the politic talk should be left elsewhere it should be left unto the writer to decide what they make and decide to post, regardless of the subjective "usefulness" of the post.
But that's just a newbies 2 cents.

Another way to look at this is, if you invite someone and they don’t care enough to show up it leaves you with nothing to show. I think empty displays will kill a show’s reputation faster than a professional’s second tier tree. I know if I put on a show and had a no show I would look for someone to replace them, Just sayin.

Huh?

This show is somewhat a competition between clubs. There are several awards given at the show. There is a “Best in Show” for the best tree, but there is a “Best Club Display”, too. Arthur Joura, the Arboretum curator, has always encouraged “creative” displays. Something other than the traditional Japanese style of display. Our club can’t be bothered about trying to be creative by building something different, we just show in the traditional manner. So clubs, however, go all out to build these elaborate displays.

Each club can also choose how they represent themselves. Some choose to be more “all inclusive”, which may mean that a novice might be allowed to show a tree that’s maybe not really ready for a bug show. But, they would rather show an inferior tree than exclude someone who is willing to participate. In our club, we always have difficulty getting people to participate, even those with good trees. We have 4 people, including myself, willing to show this year.

Last year, there was a hurricane that blew thru the Carolinas the day before the Show, and a couple of clubs literally couldn’t attend. I don’t think they will be asked not to come, because it was not their fault. But, there’s a waiting list of clubs who would want to come, if ever a space were to open up.

Add more to the table of understanding! Thank you!
That's what I'm talking about!

No right.

No wrong.

Only truths.

You’re making the faulty assumption that a few of our members can’t come up with a quality display on a short notice. Our club has some outstanding trees and dedicated members who study with the best artists in the world.

Political? Not really. Our club’s decision was made on a commitment to continuing to participate in the Expo, and this year’s display will be better than last year’s...because several of us put in a little extra time when we really didn’t have it to give.

Actually, you're a wee bit mistaken about this ... I've done the research - much of it at great peril to my immortal soul - and many who post here are not - in fact - "real" people, nor people at all ...

Yes, a few Gods and demi-gods, and a hand-full of assorted Buddhist and Hindu deities perhaps, but there are many others - perhaps darker beings as well, who sold their souls in exchange for the sacred, secret, alchemical, horticultural and artistic secrets of this craft. Do not doubt me in this ....

LOL!

So..this really is...THE DEEP STATE?!?! 😛

@Brian Van Fleet you are a gentleman. I am extending the same kindnesses.

To me, "a bit less better" (and I edited that at first to take edge off of it, and give it the appropriate level) is still an excellent display.

That said. I don't make assumptions because it is not whole truth and final.
I would by no means assume your people would put out less that great show product.

The idea I'm discussing is that which is stated true in these texts. The first little bit I quoted, which goes on to be reinforced by what comes later.

That Change of level so small...

Seems forced by this, "if you miss you're pretty much out" thing.

Maybe I need that better described?

It doesn't really matter though!

Just seems harmful, and oddly parralleling this "rule".

Which will just lead to a bunch of pics no one wants to see Anyway!🤣

While it is true that Smoke is an agent of Satan his duties are largely ceremonial.

Will, I have found just the opposite. I have met many people, primarily at bonsai shows and events, who will introduce themselves to me, and tell me that they know me from BonsaiNut.

Sure, most hide behind an avatar or made up name, I have chosen not to do this.

Hey @Adair M , good morning.

You are a gentleman as well.
Thanks for the information.

I just don't know how to say I was misunderstood without it seeming like I have an axe to grind.

I absolutely love how we can come through the situations we get into without blood or ignores.

I have never lost any respect for you, I hope you know this.

Regards.
