Keep it or Cut it?

Need more information: What are we dealing with here, some sort of Pine or a Larch? How long have you been growing bonsai? Sometimes what to cut, and when to cut is very dependent on what you are cutting on.

Better yet, @Vindeezy, start a new thread and you'll get some help. This is an 8-year progression thread on a single tree.

Good shot this morning in the sunshine...

Beautiful photograph of a beautiful tree. I hope many will take not of how the tree is accentuated by the morning light playing on the top of the moss and through the leaves. Beautiful on all counts.

This tree should be exhibited at the next National Show.

Thanks, I didn't even notice the moss until I loaded the photo to my iPad. Nice complement.
I don't know if this tree is eligible for Nationals, since it went to the 3rd Nationals in 2012. It's improved since then...

I don't know what the rules are even if there are any short of what Bill wants to exhibit, no dig at Bill intended. I'm glad he has put this thing together and is willing to go through the labor to pull it off.

Brian, I could be wrong but I believe you can exhibit your tree every other National? If so, you are more than eligible. I also could exhibit my Sharp's from 2014 Nationals next year. However, I think I will wait several more years until I try and get it back to the Nationals.

Thanks, I actually got curious and checked. To enter in the 5th, the trees shown in 1 & 2 were eligible, but I haven't seen eligility restrictions released for the 6th yet. I'm with you though, I'll probably give mine a few more years too. I have a lot of branch work and a thread-graft hiding in that canopy!

I like how you can see the trunkline all the way up with this one, without having the open zipper effect.

That's true but this speaks more for the quality of Brian's photo with the light shining through the leaves. There is no doubt that the trunk is beautiful but it is the way the light is coming through the canopy and shining through the leaves that makes it visible. If I were comparing this to an erotic photo it would be like taking a picture of a really beautiful girl dressed in a see through negligee showing everything and exposing nothing. I guess the point I am trying to make is this. Brian is an artist and as such does artistic things a lot of times not thinking about it. In this case a great tree is made to look as great as it really is by a great photograph. I have pushed for years for people to learn how to take decent photos of their trees, this one proves why. It seems that photography is so important to this art form and so underplayed. I look at a lot of my old stuff and mourn.

Some fall color. This one can be really pretty if the leaves hold up.
Going back through this thread, the base is really starting to spread nicely under that moss. I need to compile a progression series of photos showing the base over the last 10-12 years. The moss is actually encouraging lots of root growth, so I’m hesitant to remove it until winter.
