Here comes the hard freeze for 2024

Just learned a lesson. Phone app stated low of 31. Watched late news. Said low of 21°. What? Spent next hour moving trees and covering yard plants. Actual 19° this am. Guess I better watch local weather and forget the app.
None of them are correct. I’ve always said if I could live life over again I’d be a weather man…. It’s the only job where you can be wrong constantly and still get paid 😂

It really depends on where the weather station/radar is.

For my location, the weather reports give me an idea of what to expect. I use thermometers around my place to give me a more accurate expectation

You can use a shark bite on copper pipe or pex, just press it on and be back up and running in seconds
It's PVC.
Got it put back together, but the joint is leaking now.
Whatever. It's enough to get the laundry done and a shower, and I'll mess with it tomorrow maybe.

18 deg F this morning. Even with all my heating, the temperature dipped below freezing in the protected area. There was a thin layer of frozen ground on top of the trees. I watered them by hand with room temperature water.

20 here this morning but we will be in the low 40 tonight. The warm up is coming for us.... but we will see another light freeze on Sat morning. Trees will come out Sunday.
Same here. The heaters will be turned off at 11 am. So far I've burned 3 bottles of propane for heating. The wind caused so much heat loss. Next time I will use tarps instead of the ply wood.

All my BC's rootball are currently an iceberg inside their baskets. Never had an issue with the larger trees, will see how the seedlings react. Currently at 21 degrees and in the shade, so I don't see them thawing for a few days. I may have to remove the frost blanket tomorrow as we are supposed to reach 60-70 degrees, but will go up once again Friday as we are projected at 18 degrees that night. Thankfully no more cold spells announced so far for the rest of winter, at least on the accuweather site.

My BCs outside are also frozen. They will thaw out soon. My main concern is on Batman. He hasn't had much growing time so surely the roots are tender but I just couldn't move him by myself without having to rig things up

@Cajunrider in the future you could consider something like this. Or if you have a welder you could fab one up with some tubing and dolly wheels. I'm definitely going to try to fab one up once I set up the new garden. Thankfully both my BCs are still at a manageable size, but they are not in pots. Once that happens I would be adding a decent amount of weight and I don't want to mess my back up again. Struggling to recover from sciatica from this last move.

I am designing a tiny tilt bed cart for my big bonsai. I am hoping to get it done this spring.

This was my set up... I'm watering the trees today, checked a few last night and the soil was beginning to dry out. You can still see all the ice on the BC bucket up front. The heavy concentration in the front of the tree is from the frost that accumulated overnight on Monday. Accuweather says we will have a high of 72 so I may roll the blanket over to let the heat out, then cover again tomorrow as we are looking at a 19 degree night. Yoshino cherry tree sitting right to the BC... That one was a pain to cut back. Hopefully I will get flowers from the few branches I left on the tree.

The sticks sticking out of the center of the "tent" is my peach tree... That one I did not have the heart to cut back because it flowers profusely and I was not going to miss that show come late winter. Hopefully I don't lose branches due to sticky hands.

Meanwhile in the storage closet the ficus and punica are enjoying the 70+ weather.

It has been cold for us (17 low yesterday, 26 today) but the big freeze isn't coming until Saturday. Saturday will be the first day this winter when our highs are not forecast to get above freezing. Given that our average high at this time of year is 51F, that is almost unheard of.

This hard freeze event might end up being a good thing for me in the sense that I will know what to leave outside and what to bring inside. I have four different areas I stored tree this time... 1) in the shed that has a radiator heater and two seedling heat mats 2) in a detached garage without any source of heat 3) in the porch right outside of the house 4) outdoor kitchen area that has walls on three sides. The shed has mostly tender tropical plants. I have a variety of trees in the 3 areas - JBP, JM, Princess Persimmon, Oak, Crabapple, Bald Cypress, Japanese Flower Quince, Azalea, and Crape Myrtle. They all look fine now but will be interesting to see which one didn't make it.
