Extended season starting trees indoors

JAPANESE RED PINE AND SIBERIAN ELMS……(Hopefully Taxus x Media also).

I really like Siberian Elm.I been wanting to do an all indoor crop,so here we go.These will go in my new outdoor fascitily around October to grow all Winter……The indoor ones will have very thick bases and extra vigor from the co2.

I love the Siberian elm for the reliable color.

Also there’s a couple flats of seedling red Pines hopefully they get vigorous they’re a bit slow to start and look a little off color, but I think it’s a normal trait they should green up big time especially when the mature needles start to pop out.

also I am starting Japanese red Pine Seedling Cuttings too,I have many of them started and they are beginning to callous.

Going to propagate as much as I can before autumn to fill the outdoor structure as I will have a 4‘ x 8‘ flood table which can hold 16 trays.

The taxus are an experiment they’re very nice and stocky I believe it’s the Hicks Yew taxus x media for sure though …..they would be great bonsai and I would love to put them in CO2 the entire winter they are fun looking plants they are callusing in slowly I hope they root.
I have a feeling they will, but sometimes you just can’t tell.

INDOOR FUN WITH SIBERIAN ELM!!!

These are actually a very cool bonsai tree.
Every seedling I grew had awesome colors in the Autumn, they branch very easily and backbud too….I like the larger leaves on this Elm too.

Total indoor fun.I have never did an all indoor co2 fertilized crop of Soberian Elm….they will be very nice.

These need lots of sunshine……even more than a Chinese Elm.

These are growing extremely fast in about 1200 ppm of co2 fertilization.

They have only germinated a week ago!!!

Here they are and also other Siberian elm experimentation I have been doing……..

I used to used to do starter /rooter fertilizer on these deciduous trees but in the Grodan mini-blocks they start air pruning even as early as the cotyledon leaf stage as you can see the roots poking out the stonewool already…..(the indoor flats growing curently).

here is also an air layer I’m working on and the amazing fall color that I fell in love with!!!

Hey Curtis, I bought this grow tent in 4'x2'x5' to move a few trees over the winter since I lost my nice Luma last winter (I covered with mulch with my other deciduous and used a frost tent but that was not enough to keep it alive). I also have a Bloomspect 600 and a few Feit 16W, PAR18 full spectrum bulbs.

Would you recommend a fan and filter for this set up? I think the tent will be open most of the time, as I am placing it in my garage, but the last 2 years we had a freak snow storm that lasted at least a week were temps in the garage dropped below freezing at night. I will be moving mostly my ficus, the luma, and probably the chojubai depending on if we get the same snow storm or not. Also, I would love to use it to propagate some cuttings eventually.

Air filter not neccesary…….definately a fan for breeze or plants will not transpire and they overheat and lack nutrien as pools of humidity will gather around leaves and shut the stomata…… and no exhaust fan needed unless you need to build heat……..You want 75-80f in there so may have to shut doors in winter…..may get bby with just cracking the doors open………you doo want air exchange though too…….or else co2 is depleted very quickly………if it is relatively filled with leaves they will completely stop all growth if below 200 ppm of co2….. need at least ambient 380-400 ppm.

Thanks, for air exchange, like having an exhaust fan that pulls air from outside run every few hours will be fine? This will be needed if I close the doors right? If they are open I should be fine?

I haven't looked into CO2 systems, going to have to take a look at them today to see if it would be an economically viable option, since I don't plan on propagating in masses.

if you have the tent sealed, a small exhaust fan like the 4" ACInfinity with the temp/humidity sensor option would be good. the exhaust fan will kick on and pull fresh air in through the tent vents. the air in your house and garage should be in the 400ppm co2 range naturally, so you don't have to worry about that. i have a tent without an exhaust fan, so i keep it open 24/7 with only a little fan at the light height to move air around the tent.

AMUR MAPLE!!

I’m in Vermont for some travel responsibilites and had the most fortunate opportunity to get some fresh Amur Maple seed.
They are quite common uo here in Vermont.
I went to a local park to a field that gets mowed annually or biannually as the sign stated and realized nearly 1/2 the meadow is loaded with Acer Ginnala seedlings!!!

It was quite an amazing experience after I located the parent trees….. it was like being at an absolute field day festival😆
I just got done 5 or 10 minutes ago,but it’s so nice to get the species and see which trees I was selecting from and I was amazed and quite fascinated how short the internodes can be on these ……the ones growing in full sun in the meadow. The color and the little leaves were very inspiring and I’m certain I will love to grow these now.72B3289E-4DF5-4774-8331-188147EA307B.jpegD3DD0FE5-C61C-4DB0-862D-76472B84791D.jpegB98FFBA5-E6C2-46F5-A7FE-B833CC6B303E.jpeg9231EBE7-BCF4-45BA-8DC9-666C438A33EF.jpegCC0A07A9-1402-4871-8036-790DD24F97C6.jpegEEA78FC8-8CE3-4942-BD76-9E0A1F482B38.jpeg086FFD69-C6C7-4ACE-9BA3-1AA72D145FF9.jpeg92A2B978-6DC9-4191-938C-30AA734EE9AB.jpeg7CFF7B8A-6427-4FA6-A883-554E1E2A0E8A.jpeg22DE012B-62C0-4E08-B6ED-5666410CE7F5.jpeg

More pics….
Such a cool and fun experience get seed right from the source.
I think these things are amazing now!!
Such great color durable and sun loving trees.
Perfect for CM bonsai….. I despise using sprays for the most part.669D6FF0-FB94-4322-AD3C-89D79068D0CA.jpegEE882DEE-387D-4419-A6DF-BDBD461B22AF.jpegFB4B5EDD-29F8-462F-AF45-D71DEFC62792.jpegCBCF65B0-71A5-46CB-BAC9-911274143A4A.jpegEDB6E4E9-EE6A-4AF9-9EEC-42BB831B2BFB.jpegC7B06489-5374-4F76-B772-BA57B7206969.jpeg21754F3B-11AC-492B-87D8-670AEAB4203A.jpeg41FB0461-B417-462D-8315-2D8667B07C34.jpeg

Man, couldn't you dig out one of those that gets mowed? I bet they have a decent base you can work with? I wish I could find stuff like that close to me... I'm having a hard time locating a place where I can collect a nice cedar elm without getting in trouble.

Yeah I’m not going as far as to snag a tree “is live plant material if I dig deep and hard enough I could probably find a law that says I can’t take the seed out of state, but I’m just not going there if you can buy them across state why can’t I grab a handful there’s no insects in them and I’m a USDA nursery what the heck, but yes I’m not taking a plant across state that’s a whole different ball game for sure👍

HOW ABOUT THOSE INTERNODES?
Just get them to backbud prolifically like a Trident now!!!

I am so amazed by these…….On a mountaintop in Vermont and thought ,wow ….I should source some Amur seed.
What more fun can I ask for on my vacation………I was like BONSAI WONDERLAND…….a massive meadow of seedlings…….so,so funny😆

These internodes are very short…..1/2” on many of them…..I will give some kelp foliar for backbudding.

The leaves are so turgid and vigorous too.
Amazing bluegreen color on some of them.View attachment 4564841EFC2A39-4144-48C9-90C3-B8480498A2A0.jpegC72DDFA0-D11B-48B8-8A54-2F98A96FAEFD.jpeg399C3692-5228-4A59-82C2-27C3A21CF922.jpeg7495D8CC-68BB-45B8-B310-812EF44A4339.jpegF70B615A-475B-459B-982E-778A3EF9293A.jpegAF688DDD-5C36-4FD6-82B3-83968121EBA9.jpeg

When you sowed those 2000 Zelkova, did you do any seedling selection? Were there any seedlings that stood out in a good way
Im considering sowing a lot of one of these:
Pseudocydonia, Cercidiphyllum, Zelkova

Yes propagators use seeds and cuttings for the most part you select seedlings which is very fun the genetic variability is endless and very fascinating and then you propagate your selections to a Cuttings when you find some extraordinary ones!

very cool to get seeds. I have been wanting to do cuttings and seeds in my basement fish room 78 degrees year round

Yes thats good temperature for ambient co2……..should not go above 80f without supplimental co2
any indoor led grow lights you recommend. I want to do shimpaku whip cuttings and if goes good I would like to do some other cuttings

i was thinking about getting a light like this for my veg space to save a few more watts.

right now I'm using 2 non-dimmable led strip style shop lights. a 40w 4000k, and a 77w 5000k.
i like how the 5k is keeping internodes very short compared to growing under my 3k+extra red led grow light. the plants just reach for the sky under that one.

Hlg are my favoriite.

Also a dope grower on ebay sells handmade HLG TYPE ones for 30-40% less……definately worth considering. If I buy more it may be purchased from him!!
A superior price for this light!!!

Seems a big low on the ppfd range (natural sunlight at noon being around 2k).
The plants "reaching" is them begging for more light. I believe Curtis is doing exactly that to get some long initial stems on Zelkova.

Why do you want to "save" watts? 40w and 77w aren't a lot...couple of old style lamp bulbs worth.

woah, Hygrow has some really good deals. and he's using the best diodes for the job.
i don't need much light for my application. the LEDs I'm using are really old and it would be cool to upgrade.
as light tech has advanced, you can have the same amount of light or more for less power. saving a penny here and there is kind of a hobby for millions of people.
