My question is can tridents be carved believably to look good? I'll get a pic of the tree tomorrow so you can see it in context - I lime sulphured it to kill off any spores.
I'd say it's less about carving to look good, and more about getting water to drain away, removing rotted wood, and focusing on the callus that forms around the dead spot that will make it look good.

One of my favorite philosophies from Kathy Shaner is that character is developed through how a tree responds to a traumatic event, not the event itself. With your trident, if the tree forms a nice calls around the dead spot, that's the character.
