Bonsai auctions...Korean Hornbeam

As for the Korean hornbeam it's not a finished tree, it's a work in progress. I got it from another grower a few years ago and did a bunch of large chops on it. Got it into proper bonsai soil, akadama, pumice, lava, a bit of charcoal (Boons mix basically.). It still needs ramification development. The other grower had it in potting soil for over 20 years so that's a lot of age for such a little tree, now it needs ramification work to become a great tree, then a proper bonsai pot. I'd say it's 5-10 years from being show ready.

Hey Judy, how are your trees?
Doing well, already have done several defoliations already! Having a greenhouse really lengthens my season here and what I can accomplish in a growing year. Nice to hear from you, you should join us here more often!

I should, nice seeing all the pics and there seems to be a lot less bickering now. I do miss my NY greenhouse but I traded it for a state with temps warmer then a greenhouse sooo.... good trade I think.

As long as you have enough rain to water the trees with, which lately seems moot...
I think about that hawthorn I almost got from you every once in a while...

That tree was awesome I miss that tree, one of my fav I've ever owned. I wonder how it is now. I heard it may end up in the bonsai museum in Arlington Virginia I think it was.

@Beng , do you have any pics of this tree without foliage? It might be helpful to see what kind of existing branch structure there is to work with.

Chris

I don't, I hadn't planned to sell the tree this year so I didn't take any this winter.

Here's some shots showing the nebari, and an overhead view. And the largest cut on the back side of the trunk. It's sealed with a dark green cut paste, attached one showing it starting to roll over on the edge as well, this particular cut will take a few years to heal completely. In fact i'd bet it would be healed around the time someone finished ramification work on this tree.

Posted in opposite order

1st pic the Largest Cut on the back of the tree starting to heal over, 2nd a sealed cut near the apex, 3rd is the same largest cut in pic 1 from a raised view of the back side of the tree. 4th pic is the nebari, 5th the overhead view, 6th the Nebari measurement, 7th the trunk measurement, 8th a pic of the leaves up close, 9th a branch near the apex i'd remove as it's too thick, i'd use the runners under it to replace it.

Ben, all those leaves has got me a bit worried about the one I got from you. It has probably less than 10 leaves right now.

Thats not good post a pic. I'm prob a little warmer then you here in CA, yours could be behind mine. Hornbeam tends to be second to last to leaf out for me.

There was a contentious breakup of one of the Facebook auctions that led to the two auctions having the same name with neither side giving way.
Sounds about right- any club, team, forum... turns into bickering and political nonsense eventually. People in general are incapable of reasonable compromise or trying to relate to others... just check out that trade thread for a perfect example! LOL

Hmmm, I was watching this tree but it dissapeared (thought it was purchased).

Is it still available? I'll PM @Beng.

Is this tree true coreana or the other Korean hornbeam that trunks up faster?if it is true coreana it must have some age because they trunk up at a snails pace

Why is it so hard to get into the FB auction groups. Im begining to get a bit frustrated with this hobby so far,I never imagined it would be so hard to buy a Bonsai.

Because there's a world full of Ding-Dongs out there trying to get over on people. Did you contact the page admin? If so, it may take a few days to check you out. Be patient.
