its inches on the top that is why there are 16 evenly spaced lines for 1/16th
on the bottom it is millimeters that is why it is 24ish lines to make it to the 1 above it.
the reason it starts at what you thought was 5mm is because the bevel on the arms that can be seen in one of the pics.

when completely closed all the zeros will line up.

but thats why I use digital calipers no thinking.

Going to try to explain this in my jibberish Engrish... here we go...

For millimeters: In the pic below you can see that the 0 (zero) on the moveable part has passed the 5mm mark on the non-moveable part. So that's 5mm already
On that same movable part you can see the 8.5 mark matches perfectly with a mark on the non-moveable part so that will be 0.85mm
So 5mm + 0.85mm = 5.85mm

That's you and 100 bucks you will progress. Don't get rid of all of your 1st ones. They are going to prove that, show you from where you come andwhat you've done. The one thing with this latest pot is that the wire tie indentation or trough is from close hole to close hole. Generally I do mine front to back or side to side, not from a spot right together.

I have been meaning to make a thing about using the versitality in these holes.

Here's a start.
We first must move away from all traditional prepping methods, as it is too limiting.

Left, (cleaner of course) you can use
As such. And with this prep, jump from any spot to spot.

Or, as on the right, just push it down over one good root, and hide the twist underneath.
I do think these are more useful on the NW NE SE SW better than N S W E.

I will try to keep them there.

To tell you the truth I probably wouldn't use the wire holders in that pot.
The big ones are perfectly placed for wiring a tree into the pot.

With specks of light blue.

The Temmoku glaze is meant to chunk up, but this one pinged a bit upon removal, and than hours later too!

Seems to have settled down now, and should be fine, but I may test it for s&g!

I love that mottled glaze. I just took my first pottery class this week, and look forward to trying to make pots for some of my trees.
