What do you do for intense heat?

In above-average heat, and when someone else is caring for my trees I keep things simple. I move my 40% shade cloth trees into full shade, and my full sun trees under the 40% shade cloth.

When I defoliate full sun species like trident or amur, I do the same for a few weeks.

Wait, tridents are full sun? I thought all maples needed protecting, maybe I’ve been babying mine

Also I’d live in a yurt in the woods and poop in a hole before dealing with an HOA

Ah never mind I see why I was confused

I do this, they’re under shade cloth during the summer

I was thinking more of the eyesores in my neighborhood that wouldn't be permitted in an HOA neighborhood. The tall weeds, piles of pallets, engine block sitting there, junk cars, so many choices.
You just have bad/lazy slobs as neighbors
I'm not in an HOA. I have none of that around me.

I have it on good authority that tridents are quite hardy in full sun from a well-known bonsai studio in Kentucky. They can also be partially or fully defoliated in mid-May too (in my zone) to encourage smaller foliage.

Given the significance of this heat, however, it might be prudent to take some precaution. Mine is still doing great on my other bonsai table (currently waiting a shade clothe for it) so far having been in full sun this season.

My tridents are in full sun. No leaf burn at all.
Same here, full sun in central Texas, no issues with burned leaves at all. I just got back from a trip to AZ, and there were a few trident maples in full sun, at 110 degrees full green. It doesn't get worse than that weather for sure. If someone is having leaf burn on a trident, almost certain that there is some other issue with the tree. Or not being watered enough.

Full sun in Mass. for sure.

Even at 90+ degrees? We're getting hammered with heat this year

Bit of a game changer if so though, I have more full sun spots than shaded spots for my trees!

If the tree has been kept in shade, give it morning full sun for four hours or so, then afternoon shade. If you put it in full sun all day, the leaves that have developed in shade will probably burn. Next year, full sun

Mine has been doing well, even after a partial defoliation this May and an urgent repot due to being root bound. I was in the middle of organizing my bonsai on this table when I took photo of new shade cloth I put up today, but I’ll keep the trident where it is.
