What do you do for intense heat?

I agree, I don't like them either. Some of them have a God complex and try to rule every aspect of your property.

I'm fortunate that I don't live under the draconian rules of an HOA. I feel for anyone that does
Here's the latest one from my HOA.
"Please do not blow leaves and grass into storm drains or ditches - Dumping leaves and grass clippings into the stormwater system affects streams. The increase in nutrients associated with grass clippings can cause algae growth, which can kill fish and other aquatic life. Keep this green waste out of storm drains."
Mind you I use a mulching blade and there is only a tiny amount of grass from edging that may have gotten away. I can't sweep every blade of clipping.

You could erect a shade cloth at the low height approved, and just use it when you're not able to be there. But if you have your pots on the ground you may have issues with critters other than your dog...Maybe just short benches with fencing around? But most trees should be able to deal with 95 unless they are potbound and not getting enough watering, which doesn't seem like a problem for you.

Not really sure why they wouldn't allow this to begin with. It would move the cars off the sides of the streets and open up the neighborhood. But this is coming from an HOA that tried to have me remove my American flag by stating that I needed approval for the pole -- not the flag

I thought I heard somewhere that a lot of HOAs are run by management companies. I'm sure that any fines levied are partly (mostly?) sent directly to their bank accounts, so it's in their interest to nitpick over every little thing. Kinda like the towing companies that proactively patrol parking lots

i mean, they're right about excess nutrients in bodies of water but that's not grass clippings doing it 😒

I hope I'm just overthinking it. I've got a means to keep the watered while I'm gone for most of it. Should be fine.

You're right though, I could temporarily use the inside of a fence with them being none the wiser. We do have rabbits, though I have a large roll of aluminum mesh that could serve as a temporary fencing too.

How hot are we talking? I'm trying to figure out why you need to do more than increase your watering. In my experience, if a tree (or any other living organism) has enough water, it can't overheat.
Because we have unforseen highs. A heatwave.

I'm watering three times a day...I'm hosing down around the area as well to take the heat off the surface around my trees. Also a tray of water under my Ryusen. Which Bill Valavanis suggested years back during these unforseen highs.

My normal weather doesn't call for shade cloth. Nor do I wish to look at it.

I actually did an Instagram post on it.

That’s great information. Love your setup, BTW.

I've kept my trees alive through several days of 100-115F just by using shade and watering.

I just googled "shade cloth tent" and lots of options come up that look like they would fit below your 4' fence and hopefully keep the dog out.

Thank ya kindly...so many on a Facebook group were talking maples and the heat. For ones who typically don't use a shade cloth. What to do. A lot of good information found in above content that I also shared there. But this is my madness/routine. Lol

Can you use a baby gate to keep the dogs away from one section of your yard? Or build a dog run and put the trees there...

In above-average heat, and when someone else is caring for my trees I keep things simple. I move my 40% shade cloth trees into full shade, and my full sun trees under the 40% shade cloth.

When I defoliate full sun species like trident or amur, I do the same for a few weeks.

I have NEVER water more than once a day, even for shohins and and we've gotten up to 100 degree here some years. The moment that I need to water twice a day is the moment I will quit bonsai because thats my most hated bonsai chore lol. I find that I can get away with once a day so far for the past 5 years.

That is the most peaceful time for me. I feel when things are stuck in my head and I circle and I can't let things go. Watering is where I find total peace from it all. When I water...I observe...and I study my trees. I recall our journey if they have been here any length of stay. I think of possible futures with them.

I've never up until reading your comment. Of one not enjoying the watering. That made me pause.

You are a canadate for an automatic water system for sure then. 😉

I use a timer and sprinkler to water my trees.
Not because I hate watering but because it saves me an hour having to do it myself.

Plus it let's me time the watering for early morning which imo is better than watering after work. If I need to water a second time when I get home because it's hot, I can manually set it to water again for however long I think is needed and it shuts off when it's done.

I bought 2 automatic waterer set up couple years ago but never installed them , it seemed to be more complicated because of the many zones I have the trees in. You are correct , most people love watering their trees, even my next door neighbor love watering my trees when I am on vacation lol. Stay cool !

Uncle, how do they even find that out?
