2023 Heat and drought death tolls

Weather is not climate

But climate change leads to weather change.

In Wisconsin, 20 years ago winter storage was putting your bonsai trees on the ground in your unheated garage. Now as a consequence of climate change we have to plan for the polar vortex destabilization. We now have the possibility of dealing with -20°F to -40°F weather for three weeks at a time as opposed to 3 days throughout the entire winter in the past. If your trees are frozen in place you're not going to stand the chance of shuffling all 78 of them into your basement.

In summer we have to prepare our setups for harsh heat waves with shade cloth, sitting our trees in flats of pumice, and sprinkler systems not just to water but to cool our trees. Seriously, stock up on flats and bins you can sink your trees in and bags of pumice. It's only going to get hotter. Spray paint those masonry tubs white.

It is getting to the point where we can now experience the long term pattern changes that the data has been warning us about for a very long time.

I bought a bunch of trees as experiments to see what can handle the harsh heat and crazy sun all day long.
I did care for them and watered them well and all, but the deal was to not get too sad or replace them if they don’t make it, since my area is tough and I work far away from home.

Quince and cherry are on my list of casualties, by I also kinda expected that

Surprised that JM is holding on, but I’m sure it would do better if I move it closer to a west facing wall to get some afternoon shade

I posted a graphic that showed that this was literally the 68th hottest summer in Phoenix LOL
That's a really nice graphic you have there and all, but..you're just 67 years off: https://www.azfamily.com/2023/08/29/2023-expected-be-hottest-summer-phoenixs-history/, https://www.azcentral.com/story/new...-hottest-summer-record-since-1895/3350290001/, https://apnews.com/article/phoenix-heat-record-48e8d06cd7c103f6bfcc4c883efd6543. Yeah, tucker carlson and alex jones are experts in climate science and have spent their entire careers studying it, but maybe they missed the mark on this one.

look at this shit you started Cajurider, we never had to deal with this in the 1980s, and it was FUCKING HOT!!!!
Can’t blame me or my ancestors. My family book showed I came from a long line of skilled growers. For many many generations we have taken on poor or in some case even arid lands and turned them lush green with vegetation and big trees. For my own nearly seven decades on earth, I have planted thousands of trees. I still remember planting trees along road for a stretch of a mile leading to my house in early 1970’s. For decades that road had beautiful stately trees until the goverment there cut them all down for development. I actually was so glad to see them planting new trees after the development was done.

We cannot ignore the environment but we should not go nuts either. Imagine what our landscape would be if each of us simply do what we can. I have been in subdivisions just formed and ate devoid of trees. In a span of of a couple decades, they are now cooled with many shade trees all the owners have planted.

Go out there and plant something :)

Sorry Cajun, I was going to answer your original post and then political buzz words were thrown in, and it turned to the classic
'wake up people' (to shaming and blaming) routine and I was feeling attacked for thinking differently.
So I lost things mostly in spring, I think that's why summer was not so bad but I did lose 2 last week that were old, nursery stock from 12 years ago, so I was surprised - I usually lose very young stuff.

Just so you understand my feelings here...It is obvious that the climate is changing, as it has been for a very long time. We will have to adjust to it because throwing away all the gas stoves and fossil fueled cars in the United States (and maybe the whole world) will never change what is happening or make one iota of difference. The USA and other countries, with all of the activists and non-believers running around will have a great time trying to get the climate to turn around, but eliminating this, that and the other things will never change what is bound to happen. Please remember Who's in charge, and it ain't us folks.

And I am not saying that we should allow the earth and the land that we were given to be trashed, yes take care of it! There are some things that can be done to preserve it, but we will never stop the climate/weather from changing.

Big phosphate is next up for political side of the fence. Don't use phosphate it is evil, and so are farmers who use it, and we are running out anyway.
And how dare we not know about it when there is the bigmedia-sourced googleAF.

All I did was report actual facts of things that have actually occurred. There are obviously different ways to display data. Average temp is one way, number of days over 100F is another. Neither is more right or more wrong. However, if you want to be an idiot be my guest.

Oh look! Yet another way to show data! Now mind you this is not stuff from the local liberal rag but just data:

is death valley the hottest?

There were reports and actual data during COVID that air quality improved significantly and dramatically because most people were in lockdown and not driving to work or anywhere really.

Sure, the air quality absolutely changed, but that's not evidence of man-made climate change.

Nothing against you Paradox, but I have given up on trusting about anything that is written by anybody anymore, or any news cast on TV or radio. Maybe the air quality got better in NY or La, only because it was so bad normally and it was certainly affected by 30% of the cars not running, but there are just to many people out there trying to scam us, get us to see it their way on something questionable, or maybe promoting something that has cash in it for them or their party. It just goes on and on. We used to be able to listen to the news with Walter Cronkite and know that we were getting most of the truth anyway. Not at all true now with all the lies and crazy willie at the helm.

Even back in the Walter Cronkite era, we weren’t getting the truth. The only difference is that back then the lies were more subtle. Now they are blatant and delivered without even an air of shame. I haven’t watched the news in years. Being a member of a group of refugees scattered in many countries, I used my network of friends all over the world and ask the locals what happens on the ground.

Back on topic. I had to travel for a funeral. I am not sure how the trees fare in the last four days. I hope there won’t be more death.

In all seriousness, I've lost quite a few. Mostly little fellas but still... The only one I'm really sad about was my own damn fault. If I would have repotted last year it would still be alive. Here's a dozen raspberry ice bougs as my contribution to the burn pile RIP.IMG_20230903_214701.jpg
