Carved deadwood in anticipation of making some tanuki when next spring arrives. FYI, juniper heartwood is tough as hell to carve.

I may still do a little more carving later to ensure I have a good undercut all the way along all the channels, but my hands are tired and I have the beginnings of a blister on my finger from gripping the Dremel
Do the roots run down the length of the deadwood (that valley looking structure) to plant into soil? I’ve seen rock planting. Is this a similar concept? I’m fascinated with deadwood compositions. Can you explain how that works?Carved deadwood in anticipation of making some tanuki when next spring arrives. FYI, juniper heartwood is tough as hell to carve.

The trunks will be placed in the channels, zip tied in place, and grown until the wood fills the channel permanently locking it in place (like how dovetail joinery in furniture works). Roots will be in soil below the deadwood. It’s not going to be an exposed root style.Do the roots run down the length of the deadwood (that valley looking structure) to plant into soil? Here’s an example of one I made before that is in the process of growing out to lock in the channels:

Very nice! You are skilled!Another pottery class.
Did one for the books... Was getting ready to trim the pot I made last Sunday, put it on the stool while wiping the wheel and than sat on it. Did not take a pic of that...
Made two pots and glazed some..View attachment 502709
