Unwired a shohin white pine that I wired about a week ago. It was OK but I wasn't quite happy with it... I think I can do better. I think better to leave til next year to see what new growth may bring.

Went for a hike with the family near Lake Tahoe and the trees were incredible. Every style from windswept to exposed root to cascade. The incredible thing is that this is basically a big granite dome so all of these trees have grown into the cracks and crevices of the mountain.
My wife and kids got tired of me taking pictures of trees but they were so amazing I couldn’t help it. If anyone is up here I highly suggest the echo lake trail, give yourself extra time to drool over trees 😂

My quick photo op for a tree turned into a "chasing the dead wood" carving session.

While I thinning out some branches, I noticed weird looking bark. Upon investigation, I found it to be oddly soft.

So I did what any (totally) insane person would do. I busted out the knife and started cutting. Excavating the dead bits to find the juicy green live vein. I didn't worry too much about the appearance of it just yet as I want to make sure it will live before spending any time to make the wood more interesting. Maybe next year...

I'll start. I wired up an Eastern Larch.
I won't tell you I broke off two branched yesterday in the process. It was cold and stiff so I put it in the basement overnight to finish today.

Larch is my next tree to acquire. I have a question regarding your tree. I noticed branch tapering imbalance on the right side. Have you solved the issue? If so, did you thicken the tree overall or use another means?

If you solve it and spice up the line/movement a little, this beauty will be show worthy

I've not yet solved it. I have a smaller replacement branch working just above that one. I killed the branch on the opposite side with wire last year. Plan to jin it this winter. I will just try to trim it back and let the other run. Thanks for looking and reminding me to get on that.:)

Good plan moving forward, and I like the Jin idea. Such a nice tree you have there! Keep going! 🙌🏻

You got me pondering 🤔... So I cut back considerably on the thicker upper branch and will let the lower run a couple years 😜 thanks

Can't get the picture to load. Breaking my own rules 😞

today I had the chance to use a good prepared workshop from a friend of my. So I decided to build a wire box. Such a nice and chilli project. The first to picture from the creation process and the last one is the final result.

snipped the top off my styrax!

when I got this thing, about 1 year ago in my first bonsai class, it was just a solitary, straight up twig! I've been getting great growth down low but not so much in this apex, so there was no reason to keep it longer.

Is that caged fert so the birds can’t fly off with it?

Or tap the upper branch with a magic wand 🪄 and poof 💨 it shrinks

Yes, picked them up from Bonsai Tonight after seeing them all over Japan. The cat is a bigger concern than the birds! But more than protecting the fertilizer, it also keeps them in a nice, targeted spot, and can easily be moved. Also let's more granular fertilizers be easier to contained in one spot.
