What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

Cut down my elms and autumn olives collected last April. They grew well last year. Bad pic with sun shining in the lens just to show how much material was removed and stupid "helping" chickens...

And they lowe to eat cut paste, go figure...🤷‍♂️

Repotted my CQ today into a huge Koyo. Been debating whether to keep or cut the lower branch ok the left. What you guys think ?
Keep it!

Photo tax of a volunteer ash in a pot full of Chinese pine seedlings. I wired it to give the pine seedlings more light.

The PictureThis! app thinks it's a Tropical Ash. Anyone know if that's the case or have any ideas about these? It never lost it's leaves, so maybe it is a tropical ash(?).

Put this little creeping juniper in a pot! Will continue whitening the deadwood and darkening the live vein soon. Collected fall 2022, so I was excited to put it in something! Maybe will add some shape as time goes on. Welcome to feedback about how to deal with these guys if anyone has advice!

Finally separated the air layer on this JM today. I bought this tree as nursery stock for about 20 bucks and it was planted in the ground around 10 years ago. Was in a very shady spot and in pretty average soil, which was originally just a placeholder until I thought what to do with it.

For the bottom half, I am thinking of cutting just above the first wired branch and building a gnarly looking tree to match the roots.

For the top half, I pruned back some of the Spring growth at the very end of Spring and Summer has provided plenty of buds and options for perhaps another layer (if it's not too straight or boring). What I am planning to do at some point is to cut at the pink line and make something interesting out of the side branch.

Repotted Chinese Elm (kinda cheating as this was yesterday) ;)

In the process took off the ugly top that went in wrong direction

ugly top.jpg

Pot's too big but now is lighter for a geezer to lift because it's plastic. :p

THEN......

Emptied some mix that I spilt in my damn shoe. 🤪

THEN..... considered stamp collecting again.

AND that 1st pic isn't going in wrong direction because it is a skinny new branch that will get its due in due time.

Got this beast into a large training pot. A lot more root work to be done but this is a start! Was in a 10gal pot.

The nice thing about buying ultra raw material is the root work gets easier as you go labor wise. Dealing with that much soil and thick deep roots is hard work.

Had a similar task today. Got my Mt. Hemlock into a training pot to let it get acclimated this year.

Hemlock repot 02-22-24.jpg

It's a fairly old Yamadori so I'm going to take it slow...

10lbs of Akidama and 5lbs of pumice and I was still short! More coming tomorrow... 😁

Finished up the planting of another batch of hardwood cuttings. Prunus Mume, Kobai cultivar. These have finished the bloom and are beginning to have some emerging leaves. The ends are nicely callused, they were removed from the fridge today and planted in the Anderson Flat. Also pictures is an older cutting from a previous crop. it is still in bloom with and emerging leaf on top. Propagation for Kobai cultivar on their own roots. Are those 3 gallon or 5 gallon bags? looking to getting some to help thicken some trunks

Found my potentilla breaking buds today, much earlier than last year. Repotted it during my lunch break. Finally got it out of the nursery can after 2 years. We're getting snow tomorrow so it's staying in the 50° basement under lights. This winter has been so weird.

Those are No2. There is not much difference in diameter between No2 and No3, only 1.5". Below is my yoshino cherry, when it was about the same size as the cork oak in a No3.

Below is the only pic I found that have the 3 sizes I most often use, No1, 2, 3. On the left side two No1, and a No2, and in the upper right a No3 (barely visible with the dead leaves.
