@Vin
the foliage on your grey owl looks a lot paler in comparison to mine it seems, gave mine some iron supplements this spring so it might be that...dunno

Can't wait to wire this bad boy :D

best regards

@YukiShiro The new photos show them (yours and mine) to be much more similar now. You have been working on your foliage so it is a bit tighter than mine but other than that I'd say we have a match. Thanks for the exercise in comparison and feel free to share how you've worked the foliage. FYI I don't believe there are that many folks out there using Grey Owl. I was told by the nursery owner where I bought mine that they were an older landscape plant that isn't used that much anymore. Apparently, they lost out to Nanas and Parsons.

Interesting.

I can't believe people find them in nurseries.
But I found one at the depot site the other day.

Could be there why they're everywhere.....and not as natural as I thought?

I agree....they look similar with these photos.

Yes, not much information on them for bonsai either... from experience I know they revert to juvenile foliage if you look at them while thinking of pruning

I mostly worked this tree's foliage in much the same way Graham Potter works his junipers, by cutting out the vigorous long shoots and weak inner growth to balance the growth out, I do this once or twice during the growing season depending on the tree's vigor. I also remove foliage without growing tips each spring. I thin out where needed to promote light penetration and air circulation before I start wiring the tree in early winter. That's about it... if I remember something particular I did I will post it up.

Have you also found that these LOVE sun?, my shimpaku and sargent junipers get fried by the sun here, but the grey owls can't seem to get enough, it may be the pot depth though

I am attracted to the foliage color of these. They stand out from all the other junipers we use for bonsai, a bit of variation is always welcome, variety being the spice of life, hey?

Best regards

I got mine a while back from a Mom & Pop about an hour north of me. He had six or seven of them and told me I could have as many as I wanted for $5.00 each because no one was interested in them and they were just in the way. I purchased four and gave two of them to my son. I styled one as Literati and donated it to the club annual auction (it sold for $75 if I remember correctly). Next time I go by the nursery I'll probably stop by and see if he still has any and buy them. It's the same nursery where I bought my 'Seiryu' JM from.

Do you have any pics of the literati? would love to see it :)

I'm sure I have a few when it was initially wired but it was a last minute thought to donate it to my club so I didn't get any then. The ones I have should give a general idea of what it looked like. I'll post them when I get home tonight.

Hello Vin,

That looks like as very good start. these grow so fast that this one would've grown into the design in no time at all. How has you grey owls back budded for you? I've found that mine back buds nicely, and when it happens its usually tighter mature growth than the long runners

Best regards

It filled in a bit between this photo and when I donated it. I've got too many trees and have been slowly working on thinning out the ones I'm less attached to. Since I only paid $5.00 for it I used it for practice (although price doesn't dictate my actions toward a tree). The person that won it at our auction will hopefully do more with it. I'm on the wall on the back budding. This one didn't back bud at all on the lower trunk but up top where the foliage is it did well. I believe I have a photo of it the day I bought it. I'll post it this weekend. Always good to exchange experiences with others. Good Day!

Did you count how many times I cut mine?

I didn't! But it was at least three times.

Of course.....they are young, with juvenile foilage, but Damn!

I have broke and mangled no less than 30 of these in the wild, and they never die!
I suspect....healthy in a pot.......these could take all kinds of abuse!

@YukiShiro
How much foilage can you cut before it reverts to Juvenile?

Damn Sorceafrass. Did I miss your post? I'm not seeing it.

I comprende now :) You're talking about eastern reds though. I'm not sure if the Greys respond in the same way? I do have a couple Reds that I'll post one of these days.

They are supposed to be the same!
