Virginiana grey owl

Your tree looks very nice. FWIW, I also have a Grey Owl juniper in the landscape and it looks like the subject of this thread. However, the growth on mine is more prostrate. Perhaps these were staked to grow upright?

I'm pretty sure Adele is Hermans fancy, hopefully not ex-fancy!

And I've been following this a while, but this is the first time I'm seeing these pictures so well, it does look different than my J.Crack.

Maybe it's the climate?

Or a different type?

Looks better than our foilage yes?

Okay Herman, are Adele and YukiShiro the same person? The tree has come along very nicely. I have a Grey Owl Juniper but I doesn't appear to be the same as yours. Mine has been growing out after a serious cutback and is in no way begun its bonsai journey. With a little styling your tree would be even more impressive in my opinion. Keep up the great work!

Hi Vin,

Adele is my Fiance hehe, She bought this Juni as Juniperus Virginiana "Grey Owl" . What differences do you guys see in the foliage except for mine not being as pale as yours? I have one that looks quite a bit paler, but that's because most of the foliage on my Grey Owl is adult foliage, on this tree at the time of the latest pics in this thread I would say 60% needle and 40% scale. So that may be the reason for the darker blue green instead of the paler blue green? thanks for the feedback :)

Hi Augustine,

I am almost sure the tree was staked up when it was grown out, there's also a lot of places lower down on the trunk where one finds large pruning wounds of branches going sideways.

Sorce buddy!!!! :D how you doing ?

Hello Mr Wood :) long time no read

general:

the foliage on it is like 95% scale now and is tightening up very nicely!! I will go and take a few pics later on today and post them up tomorrow.

will go all out this coming winter and thin, trim, wire and style it. luckily it won't eat up our wire supply again as the main branches are more or less where they need to be. We are also thinking of doing some shari, I can already follow the live vein and the semi dead places on the trunk.

PS. Adele still dictates how she wants it styled, so I do most of the wiring, she helps thinning and trimming and she sets the branches the way she wants, but I think I want to do all of the work this time around so she can chillax, she can dictate from a chair in the shade hahaha, she's due 14 June 2016 and I'm over protective atm :) it's a girl btw

best regards
Herman

I'm sure they're the same but it's interesting to me that they appear to look somewhat different. Soil, light, water, etc. all play into the subtle differences I'm sure. When I post mine this weekend we'll really be able to see those differences if any. I looked at mine this morning and it is mostly scale. I look forward to conversation.

Howdy :)

"I wonder if the backward seasons change it too....." that gives me the answer :D I have to invert the tree; make left right and up down and inside out !!!! would be an insane piece of art then...now that IS thinking outside the box...

seriously though; I think there's a few factors that comes into play, We keep it where it gets half day sun half day semi shade, Its quite root bound, and right after doing the work last year I fed the crap out of it with a mix of sea kelp and seagull guano. One of the two may contain a lot of Fe, that may contribute to the color a lot. I know it does for my senegalia trees.

4 kids and now......a dog!

Well as well can be I reckon!
Kids are earning rewards, and being general aces, welcome to the time when.....it no longer matters how YOU are! Only the little ones!

Have you a name yet?

Nope not yet, the discussion will probably come up this festive season if we do not die of heat exhaustion first

yes know the feeling, everybody in the family first want to know how adele is doing and then how the family is doing and then the bonsai, then the dogs then the cats then the budgies then they're finished talking hahaha
