Vietnam bonsai.

Yeah I cant comment on any of that. Don't know any about that history. What I did see is they absolutely adore Ho Chi Minh. To them he is the unifier of Vietnam. There is a picture of him in every household they told me. Everywhere I went into markets, businesses, restaurants etc. etc. his pic is on the wall. In Vietnam he is second only to Buddha himself...:D
The current government is still super corrupt. The people love their country but hate their government and their police services. Apparently the government and military don't get along well. Sounded to me like there is some kind of power struggle going on. The people in general love their military (or that's what I was told).
And guess what..... China is freely invited in and taking over....

That is an interesting difficulty. A very large portion of Vietnam is made of ethnic Chinese. The Native Viet Namese tend to be at odds with this group, contrary to what many may think the two peoples are significantly different.

Yeah I said that wrong. What I meant is they are invited in commercially....not Chinese people as such. There simply would'nt be place for them as that country is grossly over crowded.
There is an explosion of growth in the building industry, and the Chinese are mostly providing the money (again according to my driver). There is new hotels and luxury resorts going up everywhere.

The ordinary Vietnamese hates the Chinese but the stupid government got bought out by the Chinese so they willing to allow the Chinese to do anything in VN. Sad but that is what going on there.

Yep that's what I gathered.

Thank you, I appreciate you following up on my lack of attention to detail.

I can't imagine being surrounded by people who also appreciate bonsai. Instead of people telling me how great their tomatoes were last year, they'd be telling me where to collect a ficus. I'd take that upgrade anyday.

I think the bonsai trees that were leafless and had yellow flowers were Ochna. A species I'd like to see more often as tropical bonsai. There are a couple species, one is preferred by the Vietnamese. That one flowers around VN Lunar New Year's. Has some cultural significance too. Wrightia & Ochna are the 2 best for flowering bonsai out of VN.

Fantastic photos. What a trip from the looks of it. Thanks for sharing.

Yup Communism super sucks for everyone under its boot. Most of us, my self included, can't fully understand its affects on literally every aspect of life.

I neglected to add, great photos, wonderful to see bonsai in another context. I think Vietnam has its own tradition of ''trees in pots'' a tradition separate from Chinese Penjing, and Japanese bonsai. The Vietnamese tradition is mostly ''home grown'' and is as old or even older than the Japanese tradition. Of course due to contact with China throughout its history, there is a definite influence from the penjing tradition.

My exact thoughts ;)

Yeah its everywhere. In the least expected places. When we traveled by car (rented a driver) my head went from bonsai to bonsai, instead of touristy sites :p
In the front yards, on the streets, balconies.....:) Often I would wonder who the hell this bonsai belongs to because it just sits here, not looking like it belongs to anyone...its crazy
Like I said above they only use sand as medium. Interesting...I literally saw thousands of bonsai but about 1% had wire on them. They don't seem to fuss very much over their trees.
Then there is their pot planting. I love the pots. Not as deep as we use.....where their isn't a bonsai, there is a pot plant for sure :D

I was wondering about the wire...thanks for touching on that subject.

This fascinated me. Its a tribe that has been living on boats and rafts for generations. They have their own laws, culture, and language. T]
What province is it?
Bonhe

Fredman,
The heavy chain is needed so that it will not be stolen. Thieves are everywhere and Vietnam do have quite a few.
Unfortunately, Vietnamese are notorious. They'll steal anything. :( we can use our brains for good or really bad things.
