My exact thoughtsIt's like tropical heaven out there
Yeah its everywhere. In the least expected places. When we traveled by car (rented a driver) my head went from bonsai to bonsai, instead of touristy sitesI had no idea that bonsai was grown there when I was there. Had I known I might have made an effort to see them.
Indeed. They constantly amazed me what they do, and with the littlest of effort. They do everything the western world do, just different and much simpler. They are a very happy and carefree people. Man I constantly laughed for 2 weeks. Its just such a happy place, buzzing place. I did not want to leave.how creative, inventive and ingenious these guys are
When I was there, among other things I now want to forget, they could do some miraculous things with beer cans, like make roofs for houses.Indeed. When you were there you were probably keeping your ass down so it wouldn't get shot off. When I was there, among other things I now want to forget, they could do some miraculous things with beer cans, like make roofs for houses.
Yeah that's what we did. We rented a driver that could speak English (very rare) and hit the country side. Mostly stayed away from the touristy stuff. Went to a lot of small town markets. Unbelievable...the people would surround us, touching and chattering away about us. It really was like they haven't seen a Westerner before. The children stared open mouthed at us. We once bought all the fresh ingredients at a market. Had to wait while they slaughter and pluck the chicken and had them cook us a traditional meal at home... sat on the floor eating it.... I even went fishing with the locals at a beautiful inland lake. Drank a man's homemade "wine". He brews it from ginseng root he collects in the mountains he said. Don't know why he calls it wine, as I can run my car on it....I like small city and countryside much better

In the front yards, on the streets, balconies..... Often I would wonder who the hell this bonsai belongs to because it just sits here, not looking like it belongs to anyone...its crazy
Like I said above they only use sand as medium. Interesting...I literally saw thousands of bonsai but about 1% had wire on them. They don't seem to fuss very much over their trees.
Then there is their pot planting. I love the pots. Not as deep as we use.....where their isn't a bonsai, there is a pot plant for sure

We had guys killed trying to take a crap in the woods. Not a safe place to think you were safe. When you were there you were probably keeping your ass down so it wouldn't get shot off.
I know I would be.
Nah there is definitely a difference between the two there. At nurseries they sell bonsai and plant pots. Some gardens have the two separated. They just do bonsai different and with less fuss. True though that some of them treat their bonsai like potted plants yes, because I saw very little wiring and no course bonsai mix...I suspect they were just considered Potted Plants by the people there...not Bonsai.
This is the guy I went fishing with. He was in the war to. Proudly showed me his memorabilia of US stuff (water bottle, eating utensils etc.) he said a US soldier gave him. When I asked him if they have any ill feelings towards the USA he emphatically said NO.
What was very interesting to me and it sort of summed up the Vietnamese attitude in general, is when I asked my guide the same question he said the following.... "We don't talk about when the Americans bombed us. We talk about when the American military bombed us".....
The Vietnamese are a very peaceful and tolerant people. Hard working and fun loving. They really impressed me with their attitude.
