Vietnam bonsai.

It's like tropical heaven out there
My exact thoughts ;)
I had no idea that bonsai was grown there when I was there. Had I known I might have made an effort to see them.
Yeah its everywhere. In the least expected places. When we traveled by car (rented a driver) my head went from bonsai to bonsai, instead of touristy sites :p
In the front yards, on the streets, balconies.....:) Often I would wonder who the hell this bonsai belongs to because it just sits here, not looking like it belongs to anyone...its crazy
Like I said above they only use sand as medium. Interesting...I literally saw thousands of bonsai but about 1% had wire on them. They don't seem to fuss very much over their trees.
Then there is their pot planting. I love the pots. Not as deep as we use.....where their isn't a bonsai, there is a pot plant for sure :D

Keep your eyes open, it is very much possible that the next world master could come out of Viet Nam. When I was envolved there in the 60's I was amazed at how creative, inventive and ingenious these guys are; the Viet Namese. If they seriously turn their minds to bonsai get out of the way.

Some randoms to end up with if.....:)

Some of my stash of pots I wanted to buy and ship, but it ended up way to expensive...

Loved their wheelbarrows. Very well balanced. Yeah you guessed it....to expensive to ship :D

The locals keep admiring me, and touching my tummy. I look like Buddha to them :D

They serve damn good food in there ;)

See the Swastika that Hitler stole?

Indeed. They constantly amazed me what they do, and with the littlest of effort. They do everything the western world do, just different and much simpler. They are a very happy and carefree people. Man I constantly laughed for 2 weeks. Its just such a happy place, buzzing place. I did not want to leave.

When I was there, among other things I now want to forget, they could do some miraculous things with beer cans, like make roofs for houses.

Very Cool!

I was waiting for one with a Fredman for scale!

Fredman,
Glad you like your visit so far. One of the best place to visit. I like small city and countryside much better than Saigon. Never went north pass da nang.

When you were there you were probably keeping your ass down so it wouldn't get shot off.
I know I would be.

Yeah that's what we did. We rented a driver that could speak English (very rare) and hit the country side. Mostly stayed away from the touristy stuff. Went to a lot of small town markets. Unbelievable...the people would surround us, touching and chattering away about us. It really was like they haven't seen a Westerner before. The children stared open mouthed at us. We once bought all the fresh ingredients at a market. Had to wait while they slaughter and pluck the chicken  and had them cook us a traditional meal at home... sat on the floor eating it....:D I even went fishing with the locals at a beautiful inland lake. Drank a man's homemade "wine". He brews it from ginseng root he collects in the mountains he said. Don't know why he calls it wine, as I can run my car on it....:D

I suspect they were just considered Potted Plants by the people there...not Bonsai.

Nah there is definitely a difference between the two there. At nurseries they sell bonsai and plant pots. Some gardens have the two separated. They just do bonsai different and with less fuss. True though that some of them treat their bonsai like potted plants yes, because I saw very little wiring and no course bonsai mix...
Coming to think about it, the trees has in general good movement, taper etc, so they must be practicing clip and grow....as they go :p

This is the guy I went fishing with. He was in the war to. Proudly showed me his memorabilia of US stuff (water bottle, eating utensils etc.) he said a US soldier gave him. When I asked him if they have any ill feelings towards the USA he emphatically said NO.
What was very interesting to me and it sort of summed up the Vietnamese attitude in general, is when I asked my guide the same question he said the following.... "We don't talk about when the Americans bombed us. We talk about when the American military bombed us".....:)
The Vietnamese are a very peaceful and tolerant people. Hard working and fun loving. They really impressed me with their attitude.

Its just so much History now...but we the USA should never have put ourselves into Viet Nams Civil war, it was a struggle between North Viet Nam and South Viet Nam ...
Ho Chj Min... NVN's leader... He imposed brutal measures upon the SVN peoples to Unite all of VN under his control.
SVN today is so peaceful because Millions were sent to NVN Indoctrination camps to learn the NVN way...After we left the country...
Nothing good or nice about the Viet Cong and their goals....
It really did not matter if you were SVN or American or left over French, you were in for a Horrible death at the hands of these animals.

Animals is the reason we got sucked in in the first place. South Viet Nam was being invaded by the North. The people from the North were coming South and brutalizing the villages and small towns of the South. The South, corrupt as it was, requested military assistant from the US. Kennedy sent advisors to try and help and train the South. However the South's government was so corrupt that they could not hold it together. Shortly before Kennedy was assassinated he had made the decision to withdraw our troops from Viet Nam but he died before the order could be placed. Many think that was the real reason he was killed. Nothing like a first rate conspiracy..
