Is there something you can apply or do to encourage the callous formation?

I didn’t apply anything. I suspect any wound sealant would help.

If you read the thread, you would see that that has already been done. The tree has undergone both base split and top split.

I meant split the large roots along with the trunk, like down the blue lines shown here:


I didn't see that in your pictures in the thread, maybe I missed it. I think I saw something like this in Bonsai Today once.

I've done that quite a few times in the past. No need for this tree. There are so many roots already spread out evenly. That nebari will be very good in about 3 years.

so cool! Thanks for sharing. Do you all feel like even nebari is critical? sometimes it makes me feel like the tree is fake.
