The 2023 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Picked up another 4 BCs and 1 Mayhaw. That is all the trees I should remove from the place. My collecting season is essentially done.

And a hop hornbeam with a great base (was growing over a flat rock).

Might want to chop this one lower actually.

If it were my tree, I’d chop about two inches above those two branches, wait for it to fully recover, and then cut all the way back to whichever of those two proves to be the stronger leader. I can’t claim to have worked with hop hornbeam specifically, but it’s a deciduous tree, so I don’t doubt that you should be able to force it to backbud lower on the trunk.

Hop hornbeam is underused . I had it in the past and am actively looking . For replacements . Yours has a nice base sometimes difficult to find . In this species. It lives up to its nickname ironwood . Wire when branches are young . Also when I chopped the top in the field . I would not have left the cut piece behind . They make great walking sticks . Incredibly tough and strong mine doubles as pry bar when collecting . Good luck .

Im going to collect this 2 yamadori Jabuticabas this coming weekend, where would you chop them?

You need someone familiar with the species . I am assuming it’s a South American species . Personally I know nothing about it . Is there a bonsai club there you can join perhaps they can make suggestion . The concern is not where to chop it for style . It’s what is the trees ability to back bud . Fir a aggressive chop

I would chop on a different tree! That's way too big for me. Good luck!
I have all day to dig them, if everything fails i will strap them to my truck and rip them out. The owner of the land will dispose of them if i cant remove them anyway.

I just want opinions on where to chop for styling purposes, Jabuticaba, also know as Brazilian Grapetree are really strong and vigorous, much like a ficus, people around here usually chop them really low, dig them and bare root them, washing the roots and changing the field soil to a more adequate substrate. It will backbud all around the cutted branches, and i will have to make a selection of the shoots that i will keep, with branches this thick it will probably sprout 15 to 20 shoots from each branch.

In that case it’s a matter of style . The branches are all straight with very little taper . From the nice base . Depending on what you see being the final tree I would be very aggressive . Mist likely cut it right back to a stump and Design from there . With new growth or chop it less . On 1 or 2 Branches and eliminate the others . So having fever worked with them I would chop everything about a foot from the top of the base . Then decide from the sprouts what you do from there .

I probably won’t collect much if anything this year. I’ve been laid up and just watering last years haul is tough.
Maybe a BC or a live oak if I see a good one.
Or another swamp ash. Last years are doing well, and they look cool when they first leaf out.

How do those bus boy tubs hold up in the sun? Do they get brittle?
I don’t know yet. So far they are outlasting the cement tub at Lowes and Home Depot. The cement tubs are falling apart and these tubs are still in good shape.

I was eyeing some gray ones like those at a local restaurant supply. Seems pretty cost effective at $6 each.
