The 2023 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Very nice . Always interested in what conditions as in area terrain did the trees come from
It was farm land and pasture about 15 years ago. It’s overgrown and about to be cleared for a neighborhood. Here’s where all the little elms came from.

That’s cool I’m unfamiliar with the elm . Being a southern species . But there cool . The big one looks great . As you know I’m a wild plum guy . Any idea what the plum is . As they crossbreed easily

@Frozentreehugger most likely they are prunus Americana
The most obvious choice of course . The bark of the tall one is throwing me off . But they are fairly variable . Over there wide range . And like I said plums will hybridize . There are 15 wild plums alone . In the USA . How common are they around there

There’s another big one I want to get tomorrow, it’s got purple ish shiny bark. I think a couple of the ones I got were root suckers of it. They are fairly common around here. I know a couple areas where I can find them.

So we will be going plum crazy at the same time 👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎might be able to get a better id with leaves . But nay never be sure purple bark 🤔🤔

Ok bro how many BC do you have in the yard right now . Or do you even know . Without a count . 😂😂😂😂😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
About 2 dozens and 1 7-tree forest, and two 9-tree forests, I am about to sell 2 of them. My selling of the BCs and Mayhaw is not to make much money at all but to spread the BC and Mayhaw love.

I was not criticizing. Just curious nothing wrong with lots of trees . Especially in development . Always thought it was strange . When non bonsai people find out we have more than a few small trees . They seem to think it’s odd . But if your hobby is something else it’s normal to have lots . 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ What are your plans to move up north you bringing all of it . You know your going to find other things to collect when you move . 😂😂😎😎😎

Yeah, I believe, for bonsai to be a legitimate hobby, you need enough trees to work on. To me, it's not practical to learn all you need to know and buy all the tools you need in order to work on two trees for 15 minutes each per year. 30 minutes a year does not seem like much of a hobby. But, I guess some people get pleasure out of that.

I’ve got another collecting trip coming up on Friday. Getting excited. This one is on private wooded property that is about to be burned to turn it into farm or pasture land. No guilt for saving a few tiny trees this time!

Forest about to be burned . Why a few small trees . Why not a few big trees 😂😂😎😎🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I am with you there. One of the reasons for me to collect so many Mayhaws. So many fantastic 20 year old trees about to be plowed under.

Yep. If I only have a few BCs, I will not be planning to do the wedge cut trial on the trunk. :)
