Terra Cotta: My musings on...and resulting actions with.

Eh...cracked cement lasts forever ;)
Hehe!.. probably just re-floor it... so i don’t lose heat out of THOSE specific cracks..

Buuut seeing as I’m soon to make a southward journey to pick up Sir Sorce’s gracious gift, my “container-for-gas-fueled-kiln-fire” situation will soon be solved.

I’m already sketching plans for a wood-fueled cross-draft kiln, utilizing my newly “refurbished” shell as the fire-box.

Exciting things to come!

After some sketching, Spit-brain-ball-storming, some measuring, some speculating on space/function AND finally, another sketch...

I think i have the design in mind. A friend just offered me a boatload (boat depending) of firebrick AND cinder block...and a majority would be done with clay/sand.

So I decided that AT LEAST this IS how I want the fusion-firebox to “be”... so I did some more exact research prompted by discussions in this thread.... and ended up mixing up some “mud”.. actually Mostly River-bottom muck and local clay and grog, and sealed up the union point, pouring/pushing through 16 cups of the mixture through the joints until they “held” (back, underside of the shell looks hilarious!)

Don’t ask about the ware chamber... My mind isn’t quite there yet.... just generalized notions.
🤣

So..All cinder blocks and air in/around the base and up sides of the firebox with dirt. I then decided to slowly flame dry the “firebox lid”.. and casually tossed some alder on thurr.733BA2B8-5A03-4BBA-9F04-B489C00E06F4.jpeg503C987E-4246-4DED-917F-B6E4880E49CF.jpeg
About 20 seconds later.... BOOM! 😬.

So I built a new one.. it’s drying.. and will get the “oven treatment” before touching flame again..

Also pulverizing some grog/charcoal to mix with my hardwood ashes for the bricks I am casting for the ware chamber.

Ouch
Hopefully no collateral damage done.

Or maybe a cemetery..🧐😁
It DOES look headstone/baby sarcophagus lid!!! 😱
....it also reminds me of Indiana Jones (the good ones). 🤣🤣

I think it’s ACTUALLY a “plate” to take chimney heat(I could be way off, though)... so quite suited for my needs.

Dinged my glasses... made me feel like an action hero.
Not that I haven’t played with fire & chemicals & power tools — and had my wee narrow escapes —
BUT — the “maiden auntie” part of me wants to fuss at you to Be Careful & Don’t Use Up All Your Luck! 🧐

Well.. I guess I would have needed glasses, either way.

🤣🤣

...and “Thank you!”
