We had our first frost this morning, only visible on the outskirts of our lawn. I knew it was coming but didn't move my tropicals in (Gasp). They're close to the house and I've learned from years of bringing them in, they do better if left so see a little cold before bringing them in. Another frost tomorrow, them warmer through the weekend. I checked and they were all fine. This weekend I'll get them all set on their trays ready to bring in if need be.

Nice. So, you're letting the frost hit them? Gasp indeed. :) I left mine out in 35F, but brought in the bougies and barbados cherries today because we're getting 31F overnight. It'll only be 31F for an hour or two, but I'm playing the safe game still.

Similar here.
  • First frost 2 weeks ago (Enough to pull a tarp out over the tropicals).
  • Last Monday white fields agains, but all the tropicals against the house.
Now it is right warm and pleasant dry fall weather outside; Just a light drizzle on my way into work.
It seems the next 2 weeks are still safe for the tropicals. Guess I will have to re-treat them before moving indoors.
I thought we had seen the last of the 55+F, but insects are out and about again.

I allow them to stay outside. A big tarp draped over them will prevent them from dipping into frost. And the tropical just prefer outside over inside so much, that every week I can give them outside, I do. (But I do not work with grow lights, heatmats etcetc. They just end up on the window sill and have to live through winter!

We just had frost out in the yard. The trees are close to the house and were fine. Once they're in they're in and it's warming up after today.
I was considering bring the Barbados Cherries back out (too many to two step at this point.). I know it's a "forecast" but long range looks like the lows will be in the mid 40's until November.

Looks like you'll have similar weather to me. Are you tenting the tarp or laying it lightly on top? With the windy plain I'm in I'd also have to stake it down, and then I'd worry about the wind hitting the tarp, & beating the crap out of everything underneath. I've protected my veggie garden with similar items/methods. (Newspaper, milk jugs, plastic bags, etc) so I could try that.

Finally got a bit of rain today. Just a sprinkle, but still refreshing. Over the weekend it's supposed to stay wet and cool, but not enough to move tropicals inside yet.
No work tomorrow after taking my son to the dentist, so I plan to get the heater fired up for the season, and maybe bake a loaf or two of bread.

This time of year, if it is frosty, there is normally no wind. If windy, we normally get wind from the coast which is mild and wet. So I can just drape it. I have a living-room-ficus of 7+ feet tall; Put all the tropicals near it and create a tent using the ficus & the edge of our glass extention as a central support.

Photo on October 20. 5.78 inches fell near midnight, and four more inches continued into this morning. Previous record from 1901 was 5.65 inches, and this was over 9 inches overall, as it came as the day was changing.
My uncle once got swept off the road and a 1/4 mile a gulley by a flash flood that hit just as he was crossing the low point in the road. He still managed to fix up that little truck and eventually sold it to my parents.

THIS is a whole new level of flash flooding to pile up multiple cars like that. YIKES!
How'd you fair?

Think we got the tail end of that storm. Some decent rain yesterday morning, a shorter bout this evening. Enough to refill the rain barrel and then some, but nothing like that.

44° increase from 30 to 74°F today.
80s for 3 or 4 days then back to normal mid 60s Friday.
We are edging just past peak foliage colour.

Sugar maple with a JWP in the foreground losing old needles.
You can see on the JWP where I could reach, and pinched candles back in the Spring and where I couldn't reach.
Last year I got on a ladder and shook down most of the old needles.

From Minnesota to N New York tonight for the Aurora.

Forecast was for lows in the upper 30sF last night, and highs in the mid 50sF today, so I figured the tropicals would be safe for one more night.
Woke up to something of an update.

And it's gotten warmer since I first checked.
Trees should all be ok in the long run, but we'll just have to wait and see.

YIKES!! Other than my P. afras and jades, my only tropicals gave up on me before the cold had a chance.

My succulents are all removed from the grow box and potted in shallow gravel substrate for the winter. They should be fine on my front porch for another week or so, but I have a spot ready in case/when the forecast changes. Weather has been very nice this last couple weeks.
