Finally got some rain last night after three and half weeks of drought. I was enjoying not mowing the lawn.
Three and a half weeks of drought is not a phrase you hear in the desert! Lol
But in cooler, greener places, I can understand this. This is the first time in at least a decade that I've mowed more than three times in a month, and I even mowed twice in the same week! I'm happy just to keep the lawn/weeds a recognizable shade of yellow-green most years. This past ±six weeks have been a blessing. Screenshot_20240921_132237_Weather.jpg
Yesterday we were forecast a 58% chance of rain. But I'll take the "cool" weather.

I'm just glad I don't have to mow November thru April. :) Shoveling snow is a rare thing now a days.

prayers out to anyone on the panhandle and the southeast. dodged another bullet with this storm (just light gusts 15-25mph, very little rain). Hot and humid month, first half was daily and nightly showers, maxxed out humidity, highs 90-95F, been squeezing good growth out.

Got down to 36 here last night after being 90 on Sunday. I moved all my tropicals inside. Somehow I have a lot more than I realized 🤔

Funny how that happens, huh?

Anyway, a couple weeks ago we were seeing overnight lows in the 40sF/singles C - one night got down to 39 - but then they went back up to normal summertime lows again. Now we're slowly sinking back to chilly nights, but at a normal autumn pace. I expect to move the tropicals indoors in the next week or two if this keeps up.

My gut is telling me it's going to be a slow autumn, and a solid winter this year. My money is on a first frost in the front half of November, then freezing most nights after that. I suspect a peak winter extreme a few weeks early; mid January in stead of the normal early February. Next spring will be a doozy; I get the feeling we'll get a frost as late as May.
Save this prediction! I'm totally talking out my ass, but I want to find out by how much.

I think we will have a wet winter.
Dipping towards freezing for 2 nights this week. Will be doing my cleanup & desinfect rounds this weekend, preparing for the move which is probably in 1-2 weeks. :(

This was before Helene hit.
We had a fantastic train of moisture ahead of it then after it turned West, it came back East and continued with beneficial rains at least 4 more days as the remnants stalled out over us.
We are praying for the folks, communities and states affected by the hurricane. Last night the death toll had risen to 215 and climbing.
We are few who benefitted from the hurricane, but...20241004_091431.jpg
...still in extreme drought. North of the capitol exceptional.
The drought monitor is updated here every Thursday so it's accurate today.
Here's the Autu.n colour calender for WV.

Ore than a week without rain now, and nothing in the forecast. Temperatures are staying mild at least, but fire danger is still currently the highest it's been all season.

Time to bring in most every tropical and house plant. I left my Barbados cherries and Bougainvilleas out to get a 'taste' of the mid 30's.

This time of year I don't look at the High...just the lows.
