Another one of my personal trees. This is a blue rug juniper nursery stock I got in February 2020.
I initially styled it (badly) to be a long cascading mishmash. This was May 2020, before I started learning at Jidai.
I never really liked it, of course. I ended doing a major redesign on it in August of 2021, eliminating most of the branches, and I removed half of the lower trunk to put that big bend by the base. I also started exposing some roots, it’s got kind of a neagari thing going on.
And here it is after some growth and more refinement in January 2023. (I love how blue it turns in the winter.)
And yesterday I brought it to work with me. I have a 3 hour layover between trains, during that time I completely rewired it in copper. Its green again now thats its warm out, it only turns blue in the cold.

Better lighting on that last picture.
I like the new design better of course. I liked the clarity of the initial design before it filled out. Like there was a clear relationship between the lower pad and the main, but now that it's filled in it's lost. I don't know the answer but the lowest branches and the apex seem in conflict now.

Those are my root cutters. They come in handy for lots of things. I like to use them for shaping jins.

Nah, not the ones he's using but the ones on the tool roll. I think a root cutter is about the only cutting tool I don't have tho...

Here’s another personal tree. I’m making some progress on this Coast Redwood that I acquired at the Pacific Bonsai Expo in November 2022. Just did a second styling on it, and I’m pretty happy with it. I’ve been pinching growth almost every day since spring, and I’ve been able to chase back the leggy growth. In many places I’ve replaced thick branches with new more proportional growth, and I think the silhouette is much improved.

Today I got to work on a special tree. This is a tree that my sensei assisted Ben Oki in styling at a California Bonsai Society convention in Anaheim. We always put this tree in our club show to honor Ben Oki’s memory.
I put a few hours in on it today, I didn’t finish it yet. Hopefully tomorrow. The tree is starting to get weak, it looks like it’s been too long between repots, I’ll have to repot it after the show.
