Rudd’s California Juniper #2

A couple months after showing the tree and you can see how well it continues to grow, the left side is untouched, I already started trimming back the right side.

Normally I’d let it to shoot out until Spring, but it’s probably going to be in the John Naka Memorial show in a few weeks.

All cleaned up now. It put on a lot of density over the summer, I actually thinned it quite a bit.

Also that little whip I was growing as a back branch thickened up enough that I cut it and have it right where I wanted it.

New back branch as seen from the front.

And now I have some new whips in the upper rear of the tree that I’ll allow to grow out to fill in some open space in that section.

Repotting day tomorrow. I have three pot choices:

The Chinese production pot it’s currently in:

This Iana Glushach round:

This Nao Tokutake square:

Easy decision I think.

The Glushach round is very nice, a little dark maybe but the depth is appropriate for the current inclination.

Love the Nao pot but seems a bit tall which is possibly why he is lobbying for an angle change???

It is a little larger than the current pot all around. 1” taller, 2” wider at the top. Nao made the pot to my specs when I was visiting up there, but then we added the lip on top which added to the dimensions.

I plan to rotate the front a bit and increase the angle a tiny bit. We’ll see how it turns out tomorrow.
