Projects from TJ’s Backyard

Was at Eisei-en last week and Bjorn said he might no longer accept RMJ work because of this exact reason. The foliage is exceptionally tedious to work with; droopy and doesn’t like to hold its shape. I have one of his RMJs that he tried to graft itoigawa on (but all 30+ grafts failed) and he outright advised me to keep the foliage juvenile unless I like suffering 😂

I ran out of patience for that particular RMJ and it found a new home with @Ranitomeya . Rani is going to get it back on track with a looot of detail wiring 😁

I moved all of the 2022 Fall collected trees out of their winter storage. They were in full shade from when we (@Hartinez ) collected them in fall. Now they will get morning sun and then dappled afternoon shade from that big elm on the other side of the fence.

@Colorado so exciting! Ive already done 3 over the last couple weeks and they've all done great so far. I guess my "frost shelter" works!

I was just remarking to my gf yesterday that I think spring has truly come to Colorado! Weather looks great going forward :)
We've finally had a solid week above freezing here, and the week ahead looks to be above 40s for nighttime lows.
Might finally be able to get my living room back in order this week.

Nice trees and you've done a great job with the benches too. I see you have some trees that would need serious protection in the winter in your growing zone. What do you use for that?

Thanks, August!

I have a detached, unheated garage that I use to protect the sensitive/smaller trees when necessary. I’ve got a space heater that I can use in there if it gets really cold for a prolonged period of time, but this winter I didn’t need it.

However, I try to keep everything outside as much as possible. If it’s going to get below 25F or so then I bring the sensitive trees in. I do the shuffle pretty much all winter!
