Most difficult tree to bonsai?

Has anyone noticed that after the OP dropped this bomb, they have not been back?

Maybe because of the number of jackass answers that were provided. Real inviting!

Not all were bad, but I will readily admit I, myself, don't participate here much because of the character of the rest of the responses!

Hey guys,
New to bonsai and excited to get started. Just wanted to ask a stupid question out of curiosity really.

What is the absolute hardest tree to bonsai?
Is it readily available or are there many trees that just don't respond to bonsai at all?
Thanks!
A Cedar Shoe Tree. Very difficult to truncate.

I don't think size has anything to do with it.

An inability to create a large bonsai is a fault of the grower, not the tree.

I'd have to agree with @Potawatomi13 on the Manzanita, or Rosemary maybe.

No Pot No Bonsai.

Welcome to Crazy, land of the non-reading assumers!

You are missing out on a lot.

I would argue that it is _you_ who are the one missing out on a lot when myself and others do not participate. _I_ am not missing out on much at all...there is a wealth of knowledge publicly available across the internet and in journals that I have access to. You, on the other hand, do not have access to the private knowledge those of us that get chased away have but don't contribute.

The way the OP was initially treated in this thread is telling proof that there are some in this community who feel themselves above others. These people just want their ego stroked. Were this question posed by Sorce or Lance or yourself, it would have been greeted with an entirely different caliber of response. That's pretty much the definition of a closed community. People can't freely participate without ridicule until they've been inducted by the powers that be...

oh, my. BonsaiNut is the most open bonsai discussion group I know of. Yes, there are knowledgeable people here, and some, are, let’s say, less experienced. Yes, there are some trolls. I’ve been accused of being condescending, but I call ‘em as I see ‘em.

Not every post someone will make will be on topic, sometimes there good natured teasing happening. Some people write and express their ideas better than others.

it’s a community. Just like any community, there are worthwhile citizens, and some better left ignored. And the cool thing, you can choose who you interact with. Or not.

I'm gonna go with tulip poplar. Straight trunks and ginormous leaves.

I'm not convinced of this. I'm working on one that's in its 3rd year since being pulled out of the flower bed as a 6 inch tall seedling. It will need to be a big tree but I think it can be done. Check back in about 5 years.

Just gotta shrug your shoulders and move on. In the three years or so I've been posting, I'm way more likely to get good advice or at least a nudge in the right direction than I am ridicule. That's not to say I haven't had posts completely derail, but I suppose that's what the ignore button is for if you choose to use it. This is a great community, just gotta accept a little saltiness here and there (which speaks for any community on the net).

Shoot me some pics of it, I'm curious now!

Maybe I should choose my words a little differently: "open" and "inviting" can be two different things.

The only reason I entered this discussion is the jaw drop I had after reading through it. Some of the initial comments were very negative...some might say condescending...then I hit a comment about how the OP has "dropped a bomb and vanished". Why _should_ they come back?

...and I know some in this community will accuse me of being a whiny liberal for this statement (they already have!), but in many of the forums where I have been a member, the first few responses to the OP would have been considered inappropriate and deleted outright. Not much moderation happens on bnut...which don't hurt my feeling none...but holy shit...a new member gets attacked on one of their very first posts and people have the audacity to question why they haven't returned?

I don't know man. When one ask stupid question, one gets stupid answer. Roasted stupid answers too.

Not much to look at yet. But the trunk is already about 1.5" thick and starting to bark up near the bottom. I wired a slight curve into the trunk when it was still flexible enough. Probably should have bent it some more though. Decent surface roots developing that are currently covered. I figure I'll need to let it get 10 or 12 feet tall before the trunk is thick enough for a 3 or 4 foot finished tree. Maybe taller. But they grow fast. Might be a waste of time but its fun trying something different.

You know, those leaves are much smaller than I thought. Will they grow much bigger this summer?

Oh yeah they will grow a lot bigger. Those are immature leaves from this spring. I haven't really started experimenting with reducing the leaf size yet. Not all of the leaves end up huge when left to their own devices, so I think it will be possible to reduce them.
